Recycling Asphalt

The house where I am staying has a paved driveway, but it is in need of extensive repairs. The part closest to the driveway has broken up and is down to the dirt. The rest of the driveway is cracking and has frost heaves in it. Unfortunately, it would be cost prohibitive to resurface the driveway with new asphalt, as it is about 30ft long, and double wide at the end. It also extends into the back yard, where there used to be a carport. There is an asphalt pad there big enough to park 4 cars on (closely) in a square. What I was wondering is, is there any way to recycle asphalt at home, like they do on the roadways with the scrapers and such? I knew a man who used to tear up sections of old highway which were abandoned, and use a heating oil tank as a mobile furnace to re-melt the asphalt and pave people's driveways during the summer months. He cut out one side, put a wire mesh across the tank abot 2/3 of the way up and throw the pieces on and re-melt them with an oil furnace burner put in through the side of the tank. Seeing as how I am in the middle of a residential neighbourhood in a big city, I obviously cannot do something like that, but I was wondering if there was any other way for a homeowner to recycle asphalt.

IMHO it is not necessary to go through all the effort that you mentioned. Around here, you can buy that ground up recycled asphalt for about $200/ton. Spread it with a blade right over what you have. Pack it down real good, it it becomes rock hard within a few months.

Really, that is all you need to do.

I'd check around, I had my driveway paved this year for $1 a square foot and they did all the prep. I didn't think it was that costly considering what I don't have to do now with grading regular and stone in the grass after plowing snow.
