weld rod color codes

I have some old rods from my fathers rod oven with color codes on them.My local welding supply cannot help with identifing them.There is alot of them, would love to know what they are.TIA...mike

I think...that it's on the metal tag on some of the little cracker box welders that Lincoln sold...like the 180/225 amp machines. Maybe not on the newer ones though. Seems as though I seen it there years ago. Fred OH

Hi iceman,

The problem with the color dot system was mfg's used different color dots for different rod coatings and with no stanard.

3 green dots on Lincoln was not the same as 3 green dots on Hobart, etc.

I would take alook at the flux coating then compare that to current numbered electrodes as it should be close.

Look really close at the box end caps as I've seen the numbering system back in the 50's and 60's on some rods.

You might also do a search on this forum, as there was a discussion early this year or late last year on the same topic.
