After reading all the posts here...reminds me of number one son going around with nicks from shaving all over his face (and little tissue blobs) and getting ready to go to local high school to perform in a show...so...I gave a class for both sons on shaving. It started...remember those old cowboy movies that we watched yesteryear on the tube? Well, they always put a hot towel over face to soften up whiskers cause that straight razor needs all the help it can get...a hot towel or hot water wash cloth on your face for a few minutes can soften up beard considerably for even a slightly used face scraper. Never tried it for an electric razor but imagine it will work there also. The nicks started disappearing almost immediately...how about that! Give it a try, it might work for you. Also for the fellows that like the Norelco triple headers, electric or rechargeable...if it starts taking a litle too long to shave with it...get you a good Arkansas oil stone or similar 600/1000 grit stone with a flat face on it and a small amount of oil and figure eight the circular blades on it, rotating a quarter turn every fourth time and see if it will perform better. The Norelco is the only one that I know of that you can resharpen.
I remember when I was a kid that the old man didn't have a new (double edge) blade and he rubbed one back and forth inside a glass to resharpen it, never tried it though. Your mileage may vary. Fred OH

Been using Norelcos for yrs(Triple header).Heads readily available when needed. As someone mentioned your face/beard needs to acclimate to an electric for a few weeks. Also a preshave like Williams Lectra Shave can make a real difference.

I've had a number of them over the years, and none of them ever impressed me much. Took quite a while to shave with and the results were always spotty.

Ever tried using an older twin edge razor? Not the modern throw away double, but the older ones that have a single blade on each side. Now that's what I wouldn't give up. I can shave in a few seconds, silky smooth.

are you talking about the one where you turn the knob on the handle to open it up to change the blade?
thanks to everyone for your help. I just can't seem to get a close shave anymore.

Yep, that's the one. Also quite a challenge at times to find blades for them. I think it's actually called a double edge, but I'm not sure.

I had my Norelco micro for about 5 years now. I am only 18 so I use it about twice a week but it has never failed me once. I have the corded model. I thought I would have prefered a cordless but after seeing my grampa having to always charge his and having to replace the bettery I much prefer mine. Norelco is made by philips, so you might want to check their shavers out. I had got my micro at wal-mart for $40. It is really easy to take appart and clean and it shaves just about as close as a razor if you spend enough time going over the same spot. It also has the side-burn trimmer which also works great. My grampa has a 15 year old norelco that is much better than the the ones. Plus the cutting heads can be found at wal-mart.

I've always gone out of my way to get plug-in only shavers, so that kind of limits what I've seen. The Brauns are great, but the newer one kept breaking the screen housing on its own. I'm using a couple of Remington double screens right now. Real cheap but works fine until I get more Braun parts.

I got a Norelco 3 X-mas ago. Glad I read the instructions :-). Said to use it a month before you decided you didnt like it. A regular razor takes off a layer of hide when you use it and that has to heal. They were right, first few times were miserable but now I wouldnt trade it. I was a die hard Gilette twin blade man. Got a really heavy beard, shave 2x per day most days and only got 4 days out of the best twin blade. Used to say electric was for sissies. Never again, I love my electric, power was out 11 days last winter and it was one of the few things I would start the generator for.

Bill --

When it comes to electric shavers, I'm a die-hard Norelco fan. The Norelco rotary shaver runs smoother and quieter than most of the reciprocating models, and I've never had a Norelco head blow out while I was using it and chew up my neck like a "screen" model did one time.

Rechargable shavers are nice, but if you get a rechargable model BE SURE that it will work as a plug-in also (not all will) and having to wait for run-down batteries to recharge before shaving can be a pain. Also, check to see how long the shaver is supposed to work on a single charge. Back in the 1970's I had a "21 shaves" Norelco that kept me clean-shaven for about two weeks between charges. It disappeared while I was travelling, and I replaced it with a "week of shaves" Remington that needed to be recharged every three or four days. (Guess I'm just a slow shaver, but I never get the "rated" use from a rechargable shaver.)

The down-side to rechargable shavers? They cost more, they are heavier by several ounces (can make a difference if you travel a lot), and the batteries or charger will almost certainly be the part that craps out when the shaver dies.

John

One more point worth mentioning . . . if you even THINK you'll travel internationally, be sure that you pick a shaver that will work on both 110 volt and 220 volt systems.

Save a power plant and learn to use a straight razor.

Had a Braun screen shaver and liked it. Bought a Remington micro screen and liked it even better. Then I bought a cheap Wahl screen shaver and it is without a doubt the best dang shaver I ever owned.
