The county tells me I need to clean out all of the weeds and cattails out of my lagoon. I would prefer not to have to wade out and pull them by hand. Any ideas out there? I don't have a back hoe but I do have a tractor.

We've used Copper Sulfate in our pond to control algae and weeds. Apparently, it depletes the oxygen in the water, so you have to be careful or you will kill all of your fish. the trick is to apply it so the windo won't blow it around, and do small sections at a time. It worked very well for us.

Doug, you will want to read the label, but Rodeo is labeled for aquatics. If I recall the active ingredient is the same as Roundup, but without the surfactant. Like Steve says, spray small sections at a time. The dying vegetation requires oxygen to decay therefore using up oxygen in the water. I spray weeds commercialy, and do a lot aquatic work. Feel free to e-mail, or post here, with additional specific questions if you want to go the herbicide route. Good luck with it. Dave

The cattails will take over the lagoon in time filling it in...so it is best not to have them...

You can devise a dredge with chain/cable and a bucket throw it out into the pond and pull it in...slow but effective

Rent a backhoe for the day and dig out the cattails...

Spraying the chemicals as a last resort would be my choice....

The weeds you need to get some grass carp...they eat the weeds and keep that stuff under control...
or there are chemicals that golf courses use to keep that stuff under control as well.

Also Barley straw works best or straw thrown into the pond controls algae and weeds....

later.

Hi Doug,
This might not be kosher, but, here's what I did.
I had cattails and willows around the edge of my pond. Someone told me that they took care of theirs with 1/2 strength round up brush killer applied in small areas at a time. I did that. It worked really well.
I was told by my chemical customers that round up is neutralized upon contact with soil. Even muddy water. I waited till we had a hard rain and the water got muddy before spraying the first spot.
Steve
