The time has come for a top notch set of long pattern metric combination wrenches. I tend to favor more obscure brands, but ergonomics and quality are the determining factors. Any suggestions?

Hi Dan Z,

You didn't say where you are but here in Canada I would choose, Mastercraft Pro Series (Canadian Tire brand), Gray and Husky.

I must admit that I have never used the Husky wrenches but they look good and feel good in the store and I have heard that they are made by Gray.

Now those are the cheap consumer tools if you want to spend more $ I would go Snap-on, Williams and Proto.

Have seen a lot of snap-on style knock-offs they work as good and feel as good as the Snap-ons but are a lot more inexpensive. good choice when you know that you are going to loose tools in the field.Once had a boss that when we went on field service he would quip. "Boy are we gonna loose tools on this job" never could stand to take an hour extra in the field to look for a 3 dollar wrench, wouldn't make much sense.Lost many a wrench in the bottom of a trench while working on trenching machines

It ain't the wrench in the hand it's the hand on the wrench!
It takes a good wench to loosen a tight nut!

Dan --

High-quality obscure brand?

Three US, one Canadian, and one Mexican brands come immediately to mind: Armstrong, Gray (Canadian), Urrea (Mexican), Williams, and Wright.

Followed by some European brands: Belzer, Facom, Hazet, Stahlwilli, and USAG.

The North American brands are available through Industrial Distributors, companies that specialize in supplying manufacturing plants and machine shops.

In the US the European brands are a bit harder to find, and are often marketed more on snob appeal (ie: "the official tools of the Klunkenbanger racing team" and $$$$ prices) than on inherent value. Most of these brands are sold primarily through mail-order suppliers in the US, but SK -- which is owned by Facom -- makes Facom tools available to all SK dealers.

I would love to find a metric set simular to the Harley Davidson brand wrenches that I bought on clearance at Sears. I am not sure who makes them but the feel so good in the hand. I own Craftsman, Proto, Craftsman, Gray, Challenger, Stanley, Cresent, Snap-on, Matco and six sets of Gearwrenches, and nothing comes close to those silly novelty HD wrenches. I wish I could find out who makes them for HD.

I bought a set of Snap On flank drive combo wrenches with that extra grip feature on the open side and I love them. I had to get a metric set too. They are the only wrenches I like using anymore.

Just my 2 cents

Dan, I am quite fond of Master Mechanic wrenches for good ergonomics and a great price. I was an auto mechanic for many years and got real fond of my Snap-ons. I switched jobs a while back and became a field service tech. Could not bear to lose my snappys in the field so shopped around quite a bit to find a wrench I liked enough to carry but cheap enough to lose or modify. True Value Hardware has a great tool selection and even better sale prices. Life time warrantee as well. Not as elegant of a wrench but feels good and works well. If you feel you must have a fully polished chrome wrench set S-K professional line is a good choice too. Have fun buying your new friends!

Speakin' of modifying...

The other mechanic in my shop has a heckuva pile of tools, everything from cheapo K Mart stuff to top of the line Snap On. There's a third person in the shop who pretends to be a mechanic when he's not doing something else, like his actual job. I call him Driver Boy.

Squeak reached into his toolbox the other day and pulled out a nice Snap On polished double box end and went to use it. All of a sudden, I heard him cussing (which he rarely does) and I looked over and saw him staring at his wrench. Somebody (we're guessing Driver Boy)had ground about half the thickness of one box end off.

I can see needing the extra clearance, but there were probably half a dozen 1/2 x 9/16ths double boxends in that toolbox, why grab the Snap On?

Squeak leaves his box open. I lock mine. I'da been looking for a place ta stick that wrench if it'da been mine...

As to ergonomics..... .nothing at all better than the Snap-On round handle ones, I forget the series #. They are mighty pricey tho. I don't like the raised part on Craftsman wrenches, or the older style ratchets....it digs in my hands.....well, until they're about 30 years old or so. But then I use mine for a living, so I'm a tad biased.

I agree with you on the nice feel of the snap-on's. I bought a set of craftsman profesional wrenchs. They are very simalar to my snap-on set from the late 80's, very simalar.

As one who sometimes breaks my tools with a device called a cheater pipe, I prefer to use the ones with a life time warenty. My first preferance is Sears Craftman. I have replaced several things under their warenty. And alway tell the guy how I was using it. They smile and hand me a new one.

My favorites are my JH Williams set of Kobalt metric combination and my Bonney offset box end metric and standards.

My dad really liked my Kobalt set so I was going to buy him one for his birthday. Before I could, they switched makers to danaher. James
