Does anyone know what the power req. are for this unit? It's 30 yrs old. 295 amp cap. is 50 amp braker O.K. or does it need to be more.

It depends what current you will be welding at. The highest current will dictate the breaker size. Most people weld in the mid range meaning higher duty cycle. Did some testing years ago, found that 30 amp breaker would hold unless the welder was pushed.

I have the same 1973? M-W welder in the original box, never removed, never used, but... I thought it called for a 60 amp breaker. 25 to 295 amps, ACDC.
Some day I'll have to try stick welding. I use a 40 amp breaker on a 240 amp mig, welded 5/8" with it, no problem.

the configuration on the plug of your welder should determine breaker size...and breaker size will determine conductor size of the circuit

Good thought... When I got the arc welder, I didn't pay much attention to the plug. I think it was in the instructions that I saw the 60 amp breaker requirement. I'll have to recheck it.
As for the mig welder, it's 240 amps and calls for a minimum circuit breaker of 40 amps. It also has an internal cb. I had to supply my own plug.
