Air tank fitting help, please

Hello Gentlemen:

Well- I've stumped the guys at The Home Labyrinth (TM), and at the NAPA store, too.... so I thought I'd turn to the pros and ask you guys:

I've got a Crafstman electric air compressor and tank that I use to inflate tractor tires and run my impact wrench, etc.

Out where my tractor lives, there is no power. While I've got a good sized tank, it's not enough to do very much work before needing a refill (plus it has a slow pressure leak-down, to boot.)

I am looking for a fitting that I can snap into the quick connector on my air hose- that will have an automobile valve stem on it so that I can drive to town and charge my air tank up at the nearest gas station.

I've looked through every type of air fitting I can find, and I can't find anything that would perform this function. Surely I'm not the only person that ever needed this.

I'd prefer to buy a fitting rather than make something- as I have this mental image of a steel valve stem shooting out of my home-made adapter at about 125 p.s.i. ! (grin)

Any help would be appreciated.

-Schotte

For a faster fill up and not having to hold a air chuck to a schader valve for 20 minutes get a 1/4" fitting ball valve and two male air QD's, put the QD's on the ball valve and turn it off. Now go to the air source and insert the QD and also have a QD on your air tank hose, hook up and open valve, when done, close valve and unhook either one first and you are full. Dont forget your valve at the station.

Mike
It's called a TANK VALVE, should be avail at any decent parts store. Regular Schrader tire valve on one end, the other is 1/8 in pipe taper thread. Think quick couplers are 1/4 in thread, so would need a reducer fitting. Total cost should be under 2 1/2 bucks. HTH

Hi Mike,

Your needing a double male air schrader fitting. Correct?

You can make your own with two screw type standard valve stems (made for high pressure tubeless rims) and a piece of CU/steel pipe with end caps.

Drill the end caps to fit the screw type valve stem diameter, install the valve stems, attach end caps to the pipe.

Nope, I just need a single male valve stem connected to a male quick-connect that will attach to my air hose.

That way I can use the air chuck at the gas station (which are generally NOT removable from their hoses)to air up the tank.

With all the various fittings that people have linked me to here- I should be set.

Thanks again, y'all!

I am no expert on this, but could there not be a problem with trying to force pressurized air back up the air hose? Wouldn't the regulator be in between?
Someone else stated that you should install the fitting UPSTREAM of the regulator(s). This would certainly not be what you are doing by connecting to the air hose.
Any more learned opinions on this??

You could get one of the fill valves that has been mentioned here and T into the water drain in the bottom of the tank and bring the pipe going into the T for the drain up to the top of the tank, then put the drain valve in the other side of the T.
Still have the best of both worlds~!

Hi Mike,

I think what you want is called a "schrader fitting". I am surprised that the folks at NAPA were stumped. Here's what they look like. They are available at Mcmaster.com among other sources. You should tee it in upstream of any pressure regulator that you have at the tank.

Hi,

You may want to check out the portable air tanks at Walmart, I think they are around $20, they have the fitting you need. You could add an air coupler to swap air tools or a tire chuck. This may be an easier route.

Thanks

If you go the portable tank route, and you have access to an air supply with a quick coupler, you can fit two male ends together and use it to fill the tank much quicker than the valve stem. Just be sure to turn off the tank valve after filling and unhook the line from the compressor side.

Hey , install a glad hand fiting also and you may be able to flag down a log truck to fill it, and the driver can also demonstrate his jake brakes at the same time.
