Sears Compressor Leaking valve

I have a craftsman model 106.174541
I got this one used....

The motor was shutting off around 50psi, and would have to loose most of the pressure until it would kick back on.

I opened the switch cover and adjusted the screw, now it runs till 98psi (it is a 100psi compressor)

But there is a spring loaded vavle under the switch. This has a constant flow of leaking air.
Is that normal?

This doesn't appear to be the safety valve, this is visible on top of the switch.

Any suggestions??

A constant leak sounds like the check valve[the one at the end of the tubing where it goes into the tank],the unloader valve is in the pressure control switch assy. Should be a smaller tubing running between the two valves.There may also be a problem with the pressure switch too,start with the check valve first.The cheaper ones have a teflon seal that can't take the heat of being constantlly run trying to run too big an air tool.Ask me how I learned this!

If I'm following your description, the little valve that's leaking would be the unloader valve. This opens when the pressure switch shuts the compressor off. It's purpose is to "unload"... dump the pressure in the air pump, to enable easier starting when the pressure switch again trips to start the motor. If air continues to leak out of this valve beyond the few seconds it takes to "unload" the compressor, you probably have a leaking tank check valve that is allowing air from the tank to flow back towards the compressor. It then leaks out the unloader valve.

You need to clean, repair, or replace your tank check valve.

Pete;

The pressure switch on th air compressor, is the same as on a water well pump, and it should not be leaking air (or water) anywere.

May be able to repair, but probley would be best if you just changed the switch out.

Sounds like that compressor has a few years, probably made for sears by Tate. Best bet would be replace the entire swx. Probably has a leaking diaphram. Dont think you should have any leaks there.
