I'm working on an old unit that I don't know who built it. It may be an old refridge pump. It is heavy all cast iron and the only markings are # 19 on the head and crankcase. It appears to be two cylinders. The intake and outlet manifold are "T" shaped. Each manifold contains an adjustment shaft to allow the intake/outlet volume to be adjusted. These shafts are enclosed by threaded cap screws opposite the inlet/outlet ports. The "T" part of the manifold is canted at 45degee's(??). Both adjustments were at full open when I got the thing so I'm leaving them there. I'm telling all this to try and give you a sort of verbal picture.
My question is about some of the plumbing on the thing. I'll use my old Kellogg K321 as a point of reference. The 321 has a line that runs from the intake end of the head to a port in the center of the crankcase. What is the purpose of this line? My old unknow brand compressor has a similar port in the intake manifold side of the crankcase but it has been plugged-off. There is also a plugged port on the intake manifold itself just above crankcase plug. This old unit has only one port in the cylinder head with a 1/4" plug in it where as the Kellogg has one at the intake and one at the exhaust. I can plumb the unloader from a port on same back to the switch trigger or from the head port to the trigger. What do I need to do about the plugged crankcase port?? This old unit seems to get pretty warm in the head area although not to hot to touch. My Kellogg runs very cool.
Lastly, I would like to get a different flywheel/pulley(10") for this unit. The original is in bad shape. Problem is that this unit has a tappered shaft starting at approx 1/2" down to 3/16"(?)using a woodruf key. All the new flywheels seem to be for constant diameter shafts. Am I over looking a source??

The ports on the Kellogg are for unloading (the port on the exhaust side) and for crankcase ventilation (the intake side). The case pressure is vented into the intake, along with a minute amount of oil vapor, which then is taken in along with the air from the filter. This gives the valves a bit of lubrication, along with keeping the crankcase from pressuring up. Sounds like your old pump is indeed a refrigerant pump. These are designed to pump oil along with the refrigerant. I bet the plugged crankcase port was for an oil supply line from the crankcase to the head, or it might have been some sort of pressure equalizing line. Either way, it may have been plugged to prevent the compressor from pumping oil. This is just a guess, since I am not terribly faliliar with refrigerant pumps. If you tap a 1/4" NPT port anywhere between the discharge valves and the check valve, you could run an unloader line from there to your pressure switch. A far as flywheels are concerned, if you can't find an original, you might have to find another flywheel from a different machine and have a taper bore machined into it.
