Hi,

I have an used Snap On Air Chisel that I picked up at a car show over the summer, sometimes it works great and other times it just seems to blow air. I am guessing something is sticking, someone mentioned running solvent through the tool. Has anyone had luck rejuvenating an older air tool, what did you use?

Thanks

I would be willing to bet it needs a trigger. Take it to your nearest snap-on dealer he should have a trigger kit for it.

Hey Jeff, try running some PB blaster air tool conditioner through it. I use it in all my tools just like you would with any air tool lube, and my tools get worked hard everyday and never give any problems. With an air hammer you need to put a little oil into the air inlet each time you use it. This way you lubricate the inlet valve as well as the little flat plate valve inside the head that causes the hammer action, and finally the piston. Also before you use it try putting a few drops down the hole where the tool bit goes to further lubricate the piston. If that doesn't work, it won't hurt to take the barrel off and polish the piston and inside of the barrel with fine emery cloth. Just be careful when you take it apart and be sure to wash it out throughly before reassembling it. Most of them as the barrel comes out it also brings the valve plates that contain the little disc I was talking about. If you don't have it with the nose of the barrel pointing down, the valve plates are prone to falling and causing a very real potential of losing the disc so watch for that. If you can't find the Blaster tool conditioner, a little Marvel Mystery Oil also works great. Mainly it just has to be a light weight oil so it lubricates without gumming. Good luck.

Air hammers only have one moving part. A big steel slug that goes back and forth. Just take off the end cap and pull it out. Check for dirt, oil sludge, or rust.

I have had some luck improving the performance of some air tools by running some solvent thru them. Seems to get out some of the oil build up out. do not let the solvent remain in the tool for long as some of the seals/rubber parts do not like solvent. the air chissels/hammers are very prone to the condition you speak of and i consider it fairly normal.I find that these tools like to work at a metalic rattle so light on the oiling.
