Does anyone use left hand drill bits to remove broken bolts, or studs, and why do they cost more than right hand bits ?

Yeah...most of the time the broken piece comes out way before the drill holes though...no e-z-out needed. Since you won't be using these for everyday drilling, buy a set from Harbor Freight and be happy....mine have held up well. :-)

Since you have to drill a hole for the broken stud extractor anyways. May as well shake the busted bolt looser while drilling at the hole same time.

Yes sir, they work great. As for cost, I believe that they cost more because they have to be made by left handed craftsmen! Since qualified help is always in short supply, and there are less left handed people....there ya go! Good luck, Larry

The cost is probably based like a lot of stuff. Supply and demand.????

After reading the posts here, I came up with an idea...why not make left handed twist drills first in production and right hand the special-not so often used drill? I guess you would have to reverse your drill press motor though...and screw on lathe chucks would suffer by trying to unscrew at times. Seems it would be a better mouse trap for a lot of us...especially the ones in the repair business. Whole new can of worms, huh? Or maybe this would only work on the other side of the equator??? Alvin,

Yes, a "must" for the toolbox.

Why do they cost more? Because we will pay it, I would guess. :>)

Alvin, I have used the lefties and they do work. I posted on here long ago with this information and got chastised for my stupidity. Guy said, "What difference does it make which way the bit spins?" Most studs come out with left turns and the bits turning left shakes 'em loose, I guess. Who knows why it works; it just does.

Alvin....yes I use them and they actually work.
I suspect they cost more because of the manafacturing process or "just because" they can charge more for them....

best wishes

I have used left hand drill bits with great results. I like them better than easy-outs. I start with small size and keep using larger ones untill bolt just screws right out.

I have a Snap-On broken bolt/stud remover kit that went unused for many years. The kit has three L/H bits and three extractors with coarse L/H threads/flutes. For some reason I never used them until about a month ago. What an improvement over the standard twist and break EZ out. I don't know if the left hand bit is the magic or what but you would have to try the Snap-On extractors to believe the difference.
As to the cost of L/H drill bits. Way back when I was young.(Dirt was still a novelty) I worked for awhile at Rochester twist drill(now a part of National Tool Co.)Left handed bits were a regular item but demand was very low compared to standard bits. The production time and set-up for a low demand item made the bits very expensive but if you wanted to be a full line source for industry you had to have them as part of the product line.
Another consideration is quality. There are good bits and there's junk. Anyone who's been around long enough to remember know's that Rochester made some damn good drill bit's. Demand, quality and cost go hand in hand.

harbor frieght has a nice set of left hand drill bits for less than $8.00. 1/8 to 3/8 I do believe.

You mean they actually make right hand bits? I thought all there was was left hand bits.
