the piston on my husky 272 has score marks on the front of piston. looks as if exhaust port has caused scoring. is this normal or does piston require replacing. if so are pistons still available and at what sort of cost. if piston needs replacing i am hoping this will help with poor starting problem it has.

he is right. Replace cyl. & piston & rings with new or good used all as one unit. Another possibility is that you used old gas-oil mix & the oil no longer lubricated. Buddy did that, left saw set 2 years. Storm hit & he took saw out & started cutting. Worked for about 5 minutes then cooked piston.

We used to see that alot when I was working on Husky's 18 years ago. If the scoring is bad enough that it pinches the ring, then swap it out. The price used to be around $40.00. A good used piston is a very real possibility. Find a local Husky dealer and see what he has available, or try Ebay. A far as cause- either too rich a mix causing carbon build up at the exhaust port, or too lean causing a lack of lube. I'd go for too rich a mix as the likely cause. Try a good 50:1 mix oil, Husky's own always worked best, and mix to 50:1 exactly. One other possibility is that you had dry gas of ethanol in the mix which Husky said would cause the oil not to work well.
