Others here post about their trucks, so I hope no offense is created by mine. I have 1998 F-150, 4wd bought new. Have other pickup for "beater" use so the Ford is used only occasionally. Truck now has about 15K+ miles. Today, one of the front torsion bars just broke- no front springs on the 4wd models. Smooth highway, truck empty, about 45mph. Really was listing to the right. Drove it to the dealership with little problem. They say $375.00, parts not in stock. They say this does happen, but not often. Warranty long gone based on time. What can you tell me about this problem?

I have a 1989 GMC 1500 5.7 liter truck and the speedometer quit working.I ran a code reader on it and it said the vss sensor was opened or shorted. Is this a quick fix and where is that sensor?

After restoring a big block road runner I would replce BOTH torsion bars and go after market, like PST in NJ or grab a custom truck magazine and start making calls, hey while your at it "lift IT"
Ford also had a real corrosion problem with there rear spring perches, cheap fix at $60 a side complete but a real pain in the butt.I think they changed the composision of the metal (cheaper)stuff and there idea of powder coating/epoxy paint is not good. After it gets nicked it peels and then the salt hides in it and you really cant throughly wash it out thus more peeling and then failure. I'll bet that your torsion bars where powder coated, is the coating peeling ????? Like this is making me reevaluate buying anything new again. Its a shame that a 70's f-150 lasts longer than a '98
It's one thing to deal with a panel rusting but a safty componate (suspention) peices should outlast the vehical!!!!! !!!!

A buddy of mine and his brother both bought new half-ton Ford 4x4s about that same year and BOTH had a whole lot of front end problems with them. I think one had a broken spring. Neither have the pickups anymore.

I would really do the research on this. Maybe there is some warranty or even recall information through Ford or maybe Consumer's Reports. I bet you are really annoyed at having such a problem with a vehicle with only 15k on it. Sometimes there are parts that look fine when they are put together, but have hidden flaws that cause failure in service. I realize this problem is more than likely unsolvable for the automakers, but they should stand behind their product and make it right. I would threaten to never buy another Ford product and tell everyone I talked to about the situation unless they fix it for free. 15k!!!!! Good luck.

A couple of years back noticed a BUNCH of these with broken torsion bars, there has been a problem with them. Put a little pressure on the dealer, or find another dealer, you may also want to call some of the toll free numbers in your owners manual or in literature that the dealer MUST provide to you concerning the lemon laws. With that low of miles, time not with standing, I think if you holler loud enough you will get some assistance from Ford on this. If you don't holler some, you will be ignored. John in nebraska

Don't know of any pattern failures on these. These can be a problem to remove, they get frozen in real good given any corrosive conditions.

Maybe a hardening problem, maybe a stress problem on a certain number that were manufactured. You can check Alldata.com and see if there is anything mentioned as to whether this may have been a problematic thing.

If no problems are listed, and particularly if there are, see if they will split the costs 50/50, or you buy the part, them the labor, etc, unless you intend to fix it yourself--15000 miles!!

Search for "Secret Warranties" on Google or others search engines.
