I work with a program at the Iowa State Fair for 4-H Youth that have restored tractors, some antique, some for working and a few modified for pulling. I am interested in tapping your expertise in this field as to some topics that you think would be most helpful for young people after they have restored their first tractor and are really getting excited about restoring tractors. What things do you wish you would have learned after restoring your first or topics that you think would be of interest to this enthusiastic group?
I am still new to this area of interest and am more the organizer than the expert. I look forward to any input you might have to get us rolling.

I'm in the process of restoring a 60 year old Ford. Here are some random thoughts: To do it right requires a long process. Major steps are this: 1. Tractor aquisition. 2. before that, Deciding what model and manufacturer. 2a. Learning the history of it. 3. Determining problems and quirks. 4. Asessing budget and determine fix priorities. 5. Fixing mechanicals first. Rip through it, front to back. 6. Decide level of restoration: work, pulling, show, historically correct, etc. etc. Once mechanicals are fixed...7. esthetics: paint colors, painting techniques etc. 8. Reassembly. 9. Tune-up, drive and show. Each of these steps requires time. A great opportunity to learn the basics of engine mechanics...and rebuild the entire engine! Aquiring a tractor may not be hard to do for a school group. Post an inquiry for the purpose and need. Search websites for donor oraganizations, post an ad here, etc. etc.
