I saw a battery charger yesterday that said it used high frequenties to restore older lead acid (car) batteries. Is there anything to this claim or are they just trying to charge more for a battery charger?

Thanks

Chuck

Here's the link to the battery chargers. They have been in use by the U.S. military for over 10 years now, and have been proven by two major university studies.

The chargers are made in China and imported by a company called Vector.

I would not buy one for awhile. Their first units failed UL, and they redesigned it to stop messing up radios within 20 feet. While the new units passed UL, they started manfacturing the new design before they had the approval, they bet on the come their fix would work. I would let the system flush out any early production units just in case they fell though the cracks in shipping. I am not saying they would ship units not meeting UL knowingly. I am suggesting taking a wait and see view for a bit.

I don't know about the claim of restoring batteries but the high frequency charger is just a switching power supply similar to the power supply in your computer. You do not need a large transformer which saves weight and cost. There is a high frequency oscillator in the charger (about 60,000 Hz or cycles) The high frequency can use a much smaller transformer than the line voltage of 60 Hz or cycles and put out a pure DC charging current. These type chargers are used a lot for Golf Carts and fork lifts and electric vehicles. I see no way this charger can do anything that a standard charger with internal electronic regulating and timing circuits could not do but a big savings over the expensive step down transformer required in standard charger.

These are very proficient at rejuvinating a sulfated battery. It only works on the lead/acid wet batteries. I think the website is: batterystuff.com , It explains everything about batteries, chargers, and more than you'll ever want to know.
