In this case, it is indeed a Brunner compressor you have, a model A 650. There are also many other companies that used Brunner tanks. I don't know if it is the same company as the compressor manufacturer though. Dunham-Bush sold Brunner air compressors exclusively. I have no idea where you would get parts, as Brunner went out of the air compressor business back in the early 80's.

rod, thank you very much for the info about the tank. it sounds like you know exactally what you are talking about. i have had a couple of people tell me they thought it was a brunner tank, but they didn't know about the compressor. i know now they didn't know. do you have any idea where i might be able to find imformation about the compressor. hopefully i will have a pic to post next week. thanks again! jerry-

In case I didn't make myself clear, let me restate: there was a compressor company called Brunner, and there was also a company that made tanks, called Brunner.

I do not know if it was the same company.

You do have a Brunner compressor, because Dunham-Bush only sold Brunner compressors. Brunner compressors were originally refrigeration pumps, which were also modified to compress air. I rebuilt a large V4, 15hp Brunner just last summer. Dunham Bush were also mostly involved in refrigeration.
However, I have seen many Brunner air tanks over the years, on many different brands of compressor. The fact that you have a Brunner compressor on a Brunner tank, might be just a coincidence, but it leads me to believe they were indeed the same company.

I doubt very much that it is a Brunner tank. The tank fabricator has to be listed on the ASME plate attached to the tank proper. The fact that Brunner is listed on a tag attached to the compressor platform and not the tank proper suggests to me that Brunner (who makes/made compressors per Roger) supplied the compressor/tank combination to Dunham-Bush but did not fabricate the tank themselves. This is not uncommon. For example, my IR compressor/tank combination has a tank with an IR decal on it. IR is in the compressor business - not tanks used as pressure vessels. In fact IR is probably not qualified, code wise, to make one anyway. My tank was actually made by Manchester Tank as indicated on the ASME plate. IR took a tank made by Manchester Tank, put their compressor on it and sold it as an IR "package".

Hi Jerry,

I can help some with the tank. Dunham Bush is a large manufacturer of air conditioning and refrigeration systems so I suspect your compressor is from that type of an installation. As far as the tank goes, I think this is what the info tells you:

1. The tank design pressure is 165 psig based on a maximum temperature of 650 deg F. This should also be the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) of the tank as long as there is no deterioration of the metal
2. The shell (cylindrical portion) is 0.130" thick
3. The head is 0.105" thick
4. The tank was contructed in 1960
5. During construction, the tank was given a quality assurance inspection (ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII - Pressure Vessels) by a person with the National Board certifying number 3302 who worked for Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company
6. The tank has been registered with the National Board of Boiler & Pressure Vessel Inspectors as #2961
7. The tank was constructed by Acme Div - United Tool Company

There should be an ASME code symbol stamp (clover leaf design) on the tank tag. I am not sure what the rd. 2-1 means. It likely has to do with the heads. Unfortunately this tells you nothing about the compressor itself.
