I own a craftsman 2,400 psi washer, with a 6.5 hp engine, that did a great job when it was new, but now the pressure is low. It has not been used all that much to be worn out. Not like before, I can now pull the start rope without pulling the trigger to relieve the pressure. Does that mean the pump is worn out, if so where can I get another pump at an reasonable price ? I would also like to convert to quick change nossel. I extended the lance with a section of 1/4" pipe, after the pressure became lower, with no noticeable loss of pressure. I am a very slow typist, so thanks in advance for any information. alvinnms

What the name on the pump sound like you got something stuck in there.

i had some pieces of gravel stuck in the reed valves of the pump preventing the pressure from building. i had to dissassemble the entire pump, but it was fairly easy. there was also dirt stuck in the bypass valve.

how old is your pressure washer? in my old unit, the pump pistons rusted and scuffed up the seals. i replaced the seals once and the unit worked like new for a year. then the pressure started to drop again. it was cheaper to just buy a new one.

Thanks everyone, for the information. My washer is two years old, but has not been used very much.
I may have let it freeze one night last winter, because it was doing fine before I neglected it.
The 6.5 hp engine is still like new. Does anyone know where I could get a ceramic pump that would fit? Also has anyone had experence with cat pumps? They seem to cost more than others.

Hi I work at a place that sells cat pump on pressure washer and they work as good as you treat them, if you let them freeze up then you are going to have a problem with any kind of pump. One thing with cat pumps you can get repairs for them ,a lot of the other pump you just throw them away.Have had good luck with cat pumps you get what you pay for.

Had a similar problem. Turns out it was a stuck pressure relief valve. There should be a by-pass hose coming from the relief valve -- remove this hose, start engine and no water should be coming out of the relief valve when the trigger is pulled. (Mine had a bent valve stem that was binding -- made a new one. Now works great.)

Thanks for all the information. I assume that it is a bad sign if you can start the motor without pulling the trigger to relieve the pressure. I will take it to the next farm auction.
