Just out of curiousity what sizes of aggregate are used in your area. I'm in an area that only has volcanic rock and is crushed to 3/4", I'm not real satisfied with it. We only have one supplier for sand and gravel and I went to get what was to be a 2 ton load to pour a small slab on the back of my house. They don't have any scale, but I should have had about 1/2 yard left and didn't. I'm thinking of getting rock from one supplier and sand from another they both have scales, but don't handle both sand and gravel.

Bob;
I drive a sand and gravel truck for Campbell Concret, of Cleveland, Tx. And I haul a LOT of 1 1/2" limestone.

Most of our state jobs use the 1 1/2" limestone also.

We have used "Rainbow" rock, about 3/4"-1", and 1" granit chips.

But most of what we uae is 1 1/2" limestone.

Hope this helps.

UG!

Thanks guys.

I thought 3/4" would be the upper limit. We have two pre-mix plants in the area, both are 30 miles from me. I need to pour a 24 x 24 slab in my pole bar so that I don't have to work on equipment in the dirt and gravel. They don't deliver on Saturdays, so it's had to find someone to help me pour it. My son works for a fertilizer company and they're busy applying chemical for next springs crop. He was going to help me, but we will probably have to wait until next spring after he is not so busy and the temps are warmer.

depends on the quality (hardness, durability and shear strength of the indivudual rocks....

typically 3/4" is about right - if you don't have trouble finishing it or getting it where it need to be (around rebar, in stryofoam forms) a larger top size aggregate could be used as long as it sound (won't break apart) BUT if you are buying concrete mix from a place the bigger the top size the cheaper the mix should be - afterall less crushing was required and a bigger rock weighs more

Bob,

The plant I usually get my mix from uses 3/4 inch granite. I have bought from "the other guys" and they have a smaller stone, about 1/2 inch. I'd say something within that range would be normal.
