My check engine light has been on since we bought this 2 years ago. It has always run rough, but gotten worse in last 6 months.

We replaced all 4 oxygen sensors but it didn't seem to help.

It is hard to accelerate past 40 mph, and makes a harsh grinding noise when I do like it is really straining and the gas mileage has gotten way worse.
Also, sometimes when I stop at at redlight, and go again, the van dies when I press the gaspedal.

These codes showed up at Auto Zone:
P0171: system too lean bank 1
P0174: system too lean bank 2
P1407: auxilary emissions controls

Do you have any ideas?

Here is a link to an automotive repair forum that also lists the trouble codes. Some one there should be able to help

I have attached a link to a forum for Windstar owners. I learned about this site because I too have a WIndstar and have spent way too much money keeping it on the road. I hope you can find some help there but you will likely find out more than you want to know about the Ford Windstar.

If you are going to fix it yourself spend $10 and pick up a Haynes repair manual. For most cars this age it will list all of the codes, suggested fixes, and how to manually test for them without a code reader once done. Could be the EGR system, but the grinding noise doesn't sound typical. Running lean for 2 years has likely complicated the original problem.

Hi Jenny,

Codes PO171 and PO174 do not mean that the 02 sensors are bad. It just means that the engine is not getting enough fuel.

If it were my van, I'd be for getting it to a competent repair facility who knows what they are doing and can correctly identify the root problem.

In the meantime, here are some ideas which might help you: Check for a plugged fuel filter, check for a massive vacuum leak, look for a leaky EGR valve and/or solenoid controller and lastly, these things are notorious for bad fuel pumps.

Also, they had a problem with head gaskets on those engines; but these usually present themselves as different symptoms, such as white exhaust, engine miss and an overheating condition.

Tryin' to help,

Allan
