Hi. I am going to have to buy some big wrenches after I start working and I was wondering, what is the best brand to go with when buying big wrenches. Keep in mind that I will be a mechanic so they have to be able to take the abuse. I already have SAE wrenches us to 1 1/4" and metric up to 32mm(excluding 24mm,25mm,28mm,31mm). Most of my wrenches are craftsman but craftsman makes up to 1 5/16" and 1 1/2". I would need wrenches up to about 2" or 2 1/2". One last question, one guy I know had bought a set of proto challenger wrenches and since I have a few proto challenger tools I was wondering, do these proto challenger tools have s lifetime warrenty like proto does? I know I don't see this proto challenger brand any more. Where would I take this brand to get get replaced? Would they replace it with another proto challenger or just proto? Thanks for they time and help!!!!! !!

I had the need for the same things some time ago, have 5 boxes full of tools but finally had to buy the 1 and 1/4 to the 2" stuff. If you have a Tractor Supply store near you they have em and the whole set wont run you over 50 bucks, decent quality and I've stood on a couple to break em loose, they work great for the few times ya need something that big, Good Luck

I'll agree with the guys who said to go "cheap"(Harbor Freight or Northern, etc.) on your big wrenches. I worked several years as a professional mechanic, and still do much of the maintenance work on our cattle ranch, working on everything from small engines to large tractors and equipment. I have a Snap-On rollaway filled with Snap-On tools, but all my wrenches over 1" are Taiwan or Chinese made. I've never broken one, and for how little I use them, it didn't make sense to buy the high-priced wrenches. For the tools I use daily, I bought the best I could find, and still do. For the one-time or occasional-use tool, within reason, I usually bought the cheaper stuff. Just my 2 cents, good luck.

I agree with RJ, the big set from Harbour freight or Northern should last you a long time. Dad and I both run field service trucks and both of us have the big wrenches that are "Made in China". The main time your gonna see something this size that you'd use a wrench on is hydraulic fittings so it's not like your using them to break loose a bolt torqued to 2000+ftlb. Keep an eye out in your local pawn shops too. I got a set of Proto from 15/16 to 1 5/8 a few years ago for $100 and found a good looking Made in Tiawan set from 1 1/4 to 2 1/4 this past Friday for $40.

I bought a set of big wrenches from Harbor Freight and haven't broken one yet. I cut the 1 1/2" & 1 3/8" in two for clearance in tight places. You will run into a lot of hydraulic fittings in these sizes. I can't see paying $49.00 for a wrench I only use once every 2 months. Same thing goes for 3/4" drive sockets, unless you are going pure heavy equipment these do me well. I run a field service truck and have been doing this everyday for thirty plus years.

Hello Timothy,

Not sure just what sizes you will be needing, but may I suggest that you buy these wrenches one at a time as the need arises. And you may want to look at a Craftsman Tool Catalog. I do believe you can get Craftsman wrenches in the sizes that you are describing. You may also want to look at a Northern Tool Catalog, or go to their web site: www.northerntool.com and look at what they have to offer. You may find the sizes you are looking for at a good quality and a good price. Also, Proto and Challenger are both some good tools. Remember if you buy good tools, they will last you a lifetime. I don't work as a mechanic for a living right now. I went into the military 18 years ago. Still have my tools that I worked with for a living for over 7 years; and wouldn't think twice about them failing on me when I work with them or if/when I go back to working in the garages. My father started working as a mechanic when he got out of the military when WW II ended. He still has a large number of the tools that he started with and most of them are still in good condition.

Proto and Challenger are owned by Stanley Works. I would direct warrenty questions to them. Hope the link works.

Proto

Good luck. Coach
