Does anyone have any ideas, why the remote for a automatic garage door opener (SEARS), would suddendly loose it's range?

It has a fresh battery in it. Nothing else has changed, i.e. autos, obstacles etc..

Another thought on this matter, I heard on the radio just recently that we will be experiencing some kind of a solar disturbance, which could interfere with radio, satellite, TV, and other electrical signals. Could this be what is happening?

Apparently you don't have two remotes to help figure out if it is a send or receive problem.

Does your opener have a learn circuit? Sometimes a low battery or just changing to a fresh battery will scramble the code in the remote and you may have to reprogram it. Joe

It may be the same thing that commonly fails in most 15-20 year old electronics (TV's, radios, etc.) - electrolytic capacitors. These components have a service life. Sometimes they fail slowly. Sometimes they fail suddenly. The only way to tell is to check all of them with an ESR meter. It could be in the power supply section or the oscillator section.

Like someone else said, a bad solder connection or other problem. Those solder cracks can be difficult or impossible to see sometimes. Having worked as an electronic technician... those broken solder connections are quite common. I've found them in televisions, smoke detectors (good reason to replace them periodically), the electronic brain box on a furnace that heats the house, and lots more places.

My garage door opener worked fine until I had the garage re-sided. There was a foil installed before the siding, and it caused the inside of the garage to be radio-frequency shielded. How I found out that it was the problem is: the opener would work as it once did WITH THE GARAGE DOOR OPEN! Try that, and see if the problem is solved. Good luck. ---===] jer [===---

I was advised one time to put in the cheapest battery I could find. The premium batteries put out too much power when fresh and screwed things up.

Had the same problem. The remote in the Wife's vehicle worked better than mine. Funny thing, now mine works better. Wonder how that happened?

Mine does the same thing, next time, it will work fine. Also seems to make a differance which vehicle the remote is in. Mine is not a Sears, but rather some cheap off brand which must have come in as the low bidder when the building was constructed.

Is the ant. on the unit still hanging down? Might try lengthing it a little. Double check the remote batteries. Logic board (receiver) may just be tired.

Mac,

Antenna still hanging (will try extending), battery NEW (TESTED @ 9.47v). Logic Board??. This unit was installed in 1985, and with the planned obselence of our society, am quite certain a replacement board won't be available. BUY NEW WOULD BE MUCH MORE PALATABLE IF IT KEPT AMERICANS WORKING...GET MY DRIFT.

THANX FOR UR INPUT.

Chopper

i have a pre 1985 sears garage door opener. the gear on the motor stripped. i called sears and had a new gear in less than a week for $10. sears is very good about having parts for their old stuff. as for your opener, try taking apart the button on the remote and cleaning the contacts inside it. i had to do that on the Stanley opener on my second garage door

Know what you mean. The board would probably be half the cost of another opener. Seems nowadays its a just throw it away world. Got a genie on one garage and craftsman on the other. Reason for a craftsman is because the genie that it replaced shot craps and cost more to repair than it was worth.
