Ratio of cement to sand/gravel

I am going to pour a small pad (9 x 10) off the back of my house and need to know what the ratio is for cement to sand/grave. If memory serves me right I think it is 1 cement to 5 sand/grave, but I'm probably wrong. It has been quite a while since I have done any concrete work.

The industry standard mix for driveways and light duty floors is 1:2.5:3, there are many types of concrete mixtures for specific purposes. When mixing concrete mix the sand and concrete first until it's a uniform color, then mix in the aggregate. Water is the last ingredient added. (IMPORTANT!) You only want to use enough water to make the mix workable as the less water used the stronger the final concrete will be, so the amount varies depending upon the type sand, aggregate, and their purity. This is where experience enters the "mix" so to speak.

You are correct, 1 Cement to 5 gravel, sometimes six gravel depending on how much water you are adding. We usually fill a regular sized pail 3/4 full of water. We add the water first, then 3 gravel, then 1 cement then 2 -3 gravel.

Don't know if this will help you much, but I'm in the packaged products industry (we bag dry concrete mix for the do it yourself folks) and our standard ratio is 15% cement to sand and gravel. Your 1:5 ratio would yield a strong concrete....
Other hints: don't get it too "soupy", and after you've finished your pour, and it has had time for the initial set, cover it (plastic works real well for this), or keep it wet by lightly misting with water for 2-3 days.

Hi Bob,

I have had excellent luck over the years with a 1:2:3 mix of cement:sand:stone.

Pick up a copy of "Handyman in~your~Pocket". This little pocket sized book has concrete ratios as well as over 700 pages of other bits of handy information.
