Log Splitter Quandary

I have an older 8hp B&S powered log splitter that starts right up, but only runs for about 2 to 3 minutes, sputters a bit, then quits. It starts right back up again, but only to repeat this cycle over again. It's got good fuel flow and good spark. Anyone had such a problem or any ideas as to the cause? Thanks in advance!

i too think its a fuel/carb/vent problem.. i run the same engine on my woodsplitter,, i have an inline filter, but i still fight the moisture problem.. last resort, it might be the condenser,lots of wrenching, lets hope its fuel

Step 1 - clean out gas tank & carb step 2 put a small filter on the gas line step 3 put some methnol in gas tank to suck up any water Good luck let us know what the final prolem was

i'll second the jet problem. i've got briggs on a couple of pacer pumps, pumping down a small pond now. because of the enviroment, water gets into the fuel tank. the problem you're describing is exactly whats happening to my engines. i take the fixed fuel jet out of the carb, clean bowl and jet and engine will run until a new slug of water or trash gets into the jet.

Thanks, guys. You're probably right on with the diagnosis, but I'm trying to get a mental image of what's taking place inside the carb. That is, how is it that it starts right back up again and why is it able to run again for a few minutes immediately after having died? The clog seems to be intermittent yet predictable. Hmmm, that reminds me of someone- but that's a whole nother story... Thanks again!

How's this for a theory:

As the engine is running, there is a flow of fuel through the bowl and out the main jet. This current (in the sense of liquid current) pulls a slug of water or crud into contact with the main jet. This blockage interrupts the flow of fuel into the venturi and stalls the engine.

Once the engine stops, there is no more fuel flow and its resultant current. The blockage is then free to float or settle away from the jet. You can then start the engine and it will run until the cycle repeats itself.

Sounds like the previous guy speaks from experience and he's probably right on. If his idea should fail (bet it won't) check the vent in your gas cap to make sure it's clean and able to "breath". Good luck---

its probably in the carb a jet is clogged rebuild it and it should run well
