Girlfriends Aclaim runs well, but lately it has been making a straing noise, most pronounced at idle. Sounds like a heat shield vibrating, but isn't. Seems to come from the right side or belt side of the engine, mayby between the the banks of cylinders, it is a V-6. Is like a rattle that fades in and out every second or two or three. Car has nearly 150 thousand on it, put a timming belt on it for her last spring, or fall, don't remember. Only thing I remember in this area was the water pump. But it doesn't seem to be leaking and it doesn't really sound like a bearing growling. Any ideas? Thanks for any imput here.

sounds like the water pump to me. my 88 plymouth voyager 3.0 had the water pump go bad. it made a knocking noise like a bad rod bearing. unfortunately it was actually diagnosed as a bad rod bearing on the #1 cylinder by a mechanic. since it has 220,000 miles i decided to drive it till it threw a rod. then it overheated because the water pump seized. i replaced the water pump and now it is as quiet as can be. However, i think the overheating damaged the headgasket. i'm still P.O.ed at the mechanic for misdiagnosing a water pump as a rod bearing.

Thanks, the web page looks interesting. Will probably be putting a water pump on soon. Wish I had done it when I did the timming belt, there it was if I remember. Worst part was getting to it.

It could very well be the water pump. It's recommended that it be changed when the belt is changed (60k), at least on the 4 cyl. I changed the belt at 100k on a 95 Neon 4 cyl and the pump jamed up at 135k, 60 mph, breaking the belt. Luckily, nothing else broke, as the 4 cyl is an interference engine. That means the pistons can smash up against the valves when the belt breaks.
The belt on my 89 4 cyl Acclaim broke on its own at about 120k , and now the pump has 138k on it. I guess it's time to change it.
The pumps jam up like they're welded!
