Hello,
I am looking to buy an auto darkening welding helmet. I do the occasional welding, not very much, mostly on an old backhoe, teeth, bucket etc.
My current helmet is not auto darkening, the lens is shot, and the plastic shieled is cracked. I don't know if it makes a difference, it is an arc stick welder. I don't know too much about welding, and I would like to know what is a decent helmet out their. I have seen prices ranges from $50 to 400 or 500 bucks for one.
I am looking to stay in the $150 area. I would appreciate any thoughts and comment.
Thanks.

I got an Optrel about 5 or 6 months ago and it's done real good for me. Solar powered so there's no switch to remember(not a problem if you pick it up only once a month or so). I weld/fab for a living now and use it for a good part of almost every day. The adjustable tint is good for the low powered mig you may end up with, up to the high amp sticks. We run a 135 amp Miller on the low end up to the 500 or 600 amp Lincoln's and it is nice to be able to dial the shade you want. I have no complaints for the Optrel.

A speedglass hood is the only way to go. They may cost more, but they are tops

Thanks to all for your thoughts. Don't know what I am going to get yet. Even though I don't do much welding, I don't want to find out when I am 60 that I could have taken care of my eyes a little better for 50 to 75 bucks more. When I have a chance I will look into these suggestions.
Thanks
Again.

You get more features when you pay more. Variable shades, larger view, better helmet, both battery and solar.
I got mine at Harbor Freight on sale for $120, down from $150 with variable shade, solar power and a view of 4x1-1/2. Add a full size view (4x5), better helmet, a replaceable battery, and the price would double. Battery is supposed to last 5 years, but by then they will be greatly improved and probably lower priced.
The first models out were $400.

I used to weld at Deere in the early 80s, haven't done anything since. Never used this type of helmet but I am wondering why if you don't do anything that needs to be really tight tolerance or pretty work or use it very much- why spend so much?

Right on Bishop, also something you might want to consider is a company called Accustrike, they have one that is a little different in that instead of auto darkening you open and close the shade by a strap on your chin, I don't know how good it would be, but on the plus side is there is never any batts. to buy and you could use any shade you want.Check them out at accustrike.com

Bought one with the Hobart name from Tractor Supply for $175. Has the adjustable shade. Has a rechargeable battery and a small solar panel on it that will charge while your welding, or you can set it out in the sun for a couple hours to bring it to full charge.
