I have a 98 eclipse 4 cyl. I think I may want to bore it out because I hear this will add a lot of horse power. Are there any bad sides to doing this?

How much horsepower will it give my car?

I wouldn't recommend boring out a 4 banger it not worth the time and the money you would put into it. I would check out puting a turbo or something of the sort on it first. If you do decide you want horses maybe check out trying to put a bigger cam in it.

rather than boring out the motor, very expensive as the previous poster said, try to find a turbo motor for your car. or put a turbo on the motor. these would be the easiest and most economical ways to go

Boring alone won't give you enough extra horsepower to come anywhere NEAR justifying the expense. Machine shop fees and parts could EASILY top $1000, maybe $1500, and depending on how much displacement you gain, you might see 10 HP or so. That's assuming the engine is even capable of being bored out, and you can find the oversize pistons, etc.

You can get more horsepower more cheaply by traditional hot rodding techniques such as a less restrictive exhaust (ie, headers) and finding a computer chip with more aggressive timing curves, etc.

Read some car mags such as Hot Rod or the like, and check out what's being done to modern 4 bangers. Also, be sure and check your state's emission laws. Be a shame to drop a bundle tweaking your car and find out you can't legally drive it.
