Hi all:

I recently bought a 1955 Ferguson TO-35. It has a front end loader run by a hydraulic pump off the fan belt shaft.

When I was getting it, the dealer checked the pressure and found it to be 1000psi. Reason he checked it was I told him if it could run a vertical log splitter, I'd take that too. He said I really need up into the 1500 to 2000psi range, and it wasn't worth the cost to upgrade the tractor, just buy an independent log splitter (which btw he *doesn't* sell).

Today I found a home-built log splitter for sail on the side of the road. 3pt, vertical just like I'd like.

This one had two Cylinders.

If I'm thinking this through right
-- 2 cylinders take more volume, so it will be slower than a single cylinder
-- But 1000psi x 2 cylinders = 2000lbs of force (assuming 1 sq. in. cross-section area for the cylinder) v. 1000psi to a single 1sq. in. cylinder producing 1000lbs.

Does that sound right?

I hand split most of my firewood since I enjoy it (after working on computers all day, I call it stress relief :) ). But I need a splitter for the big gnarly pieces -- does this sound like a reasonable setup?

(BTW, guy is showing it on the side of the road hitched to a '39 9N, although that's not the power source, it was neat looking at the tractor too!)

Put a 9 foot Snow Plow on my Ford F350. My fisher underhood belt driven pump barely lifted it & would not lift it over 6 inches. If the blade had snow on it it never would have lifted it. Had a spare lift cylinder, doubled them up in tandem & though slower she now can REALY pile snow....

Just a little food for thought here, several years ago I bought a log splitter for the same reason you want one, those big gnarly chunks. It really didn't work all that great, the ram would bury itself into the log, and become hopelessly stuck, then I'd spend several minutes getting it unstuck, not an easy job.
In summary, if you can't split it with a mall and wedges, you won't split it with the hydraulic splitter either.

why not use chain and let hydraulics pull back stuck piece..built a 3 point splitter works grat and yes we split wood with it that you cannot split with wedge...have nice day may god bless

Yes, I did use the chain trick, but there are still going to be some chunks of wood that just won't split, and I am not trying to sound negative about wood splitters, they are great, just a little over-rated.

We have never found a block of wood that we couldn't split. I don't care what kind of wood you are talking.

If it sticks on the splitter just give it a couple of wacks wit the axe.

Better than that, don't try to half every piece. You wouldn't try to half a huge block with a wedge so why try with a splitter? Take smaller bites and the wood will never get stuck. This is really easy if you are using a verticle splitter but we do it with a horizontal one too.

If you do get one stuck the most drastic thing we have done is make a cut line with you chainsaw where you want it to split (usually 1-2 inches deep does it). But usually just 2 or 3 wacks with the axe does it.

Just my 2 cents.

Let the cylinder take that stuck piece off. Weld a block on the beam so when you move the cylinder back the wood hits the block and removes the piece

What is limiting the output of the tractor? Is it the pump or is it the valve? You can tell which it is by unhooking the return line and putting it into a bucket. Now start the tractor and activate the valve against a load it cannot move. If the oil keeps coming out of the return line, the pressure relief in the valve is the limiting factor. If the oil flow stops, the pump has quit moving the oil. This test will be removing oil from the system, so don't take forever or your reservoir will be empty. It may be worth it to buy a new higher pressure pump if the belt drive can handle the added power of the load. If turning up the pressure of the pressure relief valve will do the job, make sure the rest of the system (such as hoses and loader) can stand the higher pressure, or add a power beyond valve as the first one after the pump in the system.

find the diameter of the piston in inches. multiply the diameter by itself. mulitply by .785 then multiply by the pressure of your system (1000psi) that will give you the force in pounds that a single cylinder will give. you are correct two equal diameter cylinders would be twice this calculated force, half the speed of a single.

example for a 5 in dia cyclinder" 5" x 5" = 25

25 x .785 = 19.625 x 1000 psi = 19625 lbs for the single cylinder x 2 cylinders = 39250 lbs, or about 19 tons.

If you could find a used PTO pump it would solve a couple of problems. It would simplify the plumbing, being right there at the rear of the tractor and eliminate any question about the loader's pump. Also makes the splitter useful for any other 3 pt. tractor. If you're unfamiliar with pto pumps, look in Northern Tools catalog. You'll also see why you want a used one.

Chuck has it right. At an auction I purchased a splitter with the PTO pump and 5" cylinder and there is nothing it can't split on a fast idle. The 150.00 bid was great too.
