I have an old 1959 model cincinnati mill and it seems to be stuck in high range I can't slow it down it has a variable speed pulley on it,I just recently bought it and am still figureing out what I have, and what I don't have.It has a high and low and neutral lever on the side, but when I change the selection it acts like it is not connected to anything, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Terry,

It sound like you have a mill similiar to mine, model 1D. Service and parts manuals ($20.00) are available from Cincinnati Machine (www.cinmach.com). Parts are available from from them as well as Parts N Parts 1950 Berry Rd, Elida OH 45807 ph. 419 331 5658. I don't want to scare you but I replaced two cluster gears in the power feed gear box for the table at $1000.00 for used gears. Yur low speed pinion should be more reasonable. Good Luck!

Terry, Hi and Lo range on those machines were accomplished through gearing. Variable speed was accomplished by transfering the diameter of the drive from the drive shive to the driven shive. If your machine has sat around for some time, the gears and shives could well be siezed in the position which it was last ran. you may be able to free things by local lubrication, if not, then you may have to disassemble the gear housing and the variable speed shives until they work freely.

Terry --

I suggest that you swing by the Practical Machinist bulletin board (www.practicalmachinist.com) with your questions. It's a great site!
