Search for invertors, homepower, and independent living. There are hundreds of sites detailing invertors, uses, sizing, installations etc. Check out the RV forums for many talks by experienced independent power folks. Your 1,000W constant use invertor will use 6ga or larger wires from the "batteries"-plural because one is'nt going to do it. RV'ers that use invertors to camp on BLM land in the southwest for several winter months usually have a bank of 4 6V Trojan golf cart batteries or more, recharged by solar panels to power thier invertor. Then they must closly monitor usage to avoid depleting the battery bank daily.

Before I retired in 2000, I had installed a 600Watt inverter in my compamy truck, It did not like the dash power outlet, not enough power thru the system. SO I ran a welding cable from the main battery connetion fuse, thru the dash into the backcage and installed another outlet, grounded to the frame, it worked great. I only ran a 15" monitor, complete desktop computer system, and a 30" window fan installed on the backcage, to draw cold air from the trucks front only airconditioner. I pulled it at retirement, They work great, but sometimes the dash outlet is not enough depending on what you need to plug in.

They are hard on the Alternator, you will replace it if you draw alot from it.

I use the 400 watt Vector to power a 4 1/2" angle grinder on my place which has no electric service yet. I also use it with a big Freightliner battery to run a tv/vcr, radio and 13w flourescent lamp in the trailer. I recently got a 700/1400 watt Vector for $70, but haven't used it yet.

Put a 2000 watt unit on my service truck about 2 years ago. When it goes out,I am going to go straight down and get another. It has got to be the handiest tool Ive bought in ten years.Mine is a Tripplite brand.I believe it cost me around $350 give or take a little.I have it mounted in the rear tool box on my truck and any corded tool I have will reach to where my vise is.I put an extra battery in parrallel in my truck for safty but it really isn't needed unless I run it a long time with the engine off.

i have a Vector brand power inverter. it is 400 watts and i bought it for $50 2 years ago at Target. now i see the 400 watt ones at home depot for $39. they go up to 2000 watts, but the high wattage units (more than 600) are significantly more expensive then the smaller ones. the Vector units appear to be of very high quality. my 400 watt unit can power a 500 watt halogen light with no problem.

be aware that the power inverter takes a significant amount of power. divide the wattage by 12 to find out how many amps it will be drawing from your battery and alternator. you will need big wiring for a 1000 watt inverter.
