Plastic tank repairs

I've got a crack in a plastic gas tank on a 10hp walk behind Bushwacker. The crack is at the opening where the gas cut-off is screwed into. Has anyone had sucess with repairing, or sealing a crack in a black plastic gas tank?

The replacement tank is $53.

IF it is a polyethylene tank it will probably be crosslinked, and can not be heat welded. It will have to be be fluorinated after the repair to prevent cracking. I successfully repaired a STIHL gas tank with JB Weld. You should use solvent alcohol or lacquer thinner to clean the repair area.

Northern has plastics welding kit i think its about $100. no cheap way out.

One point not mentioned is that the plastic must be identified as to the type before any repairs are attempted. Polyethylene and polypropylene- and your tank may well be one of these-can only be heat welded. Any filler used needs to be the same type as the parent material being welded. No effective adhesives exist for these two types. By feel and smell, I can identify most plastics, but words on a forum cannot explain the process.

Take the tank to a local body shop. They will have some two part adhesives used on ABS plastic body panels. If you can get them to do the job, it WILL hold.

Might cost you $10-15 bucks though, they have to mix a fairly large amonut just to get a little to use.

I haven't tried it on plastic, but JB Weld would be a good shot and cheap.

I tried the "Goop" Household stuff on a white plastic gas tank and it only held for a few week before leaking. It says for plastic, but I think the gas killed it. I'll have to try something else. JB Weld does not specify plastic, but it could work.

I have used JB Weld on a black plastic gas tank and it has held for two years. I know that this is not the ideal solution, but for me, it has worked. Good luck

I'VE TRIED JB WELD AND IT WON'T WORK. SOMEONE TOLD ME ONCE THAT IT'S POSSIBLE TO "WELD" THIS BUT YOU NEED THE EQUIPMENT. YOU MIGHT LOOK IN JC WHITNEY AND SEE IF THEY HAVE ANYTHING.

Yeah, it can be "welded". Look for a place that builds plastic tanks, or a place that repairs ATV fenders.
