The clutch in my 86 Dodge 1/2 ton went through a chattering spell for a while last summer. It is clearing up now. Did it once before. It seemed to be worse when I hadn't used the truck for a few days. Crazy as it seems, it seemed to come with the humidity this summer and leave with the dryer air this fall. Live in southern New England where it gets quite humid. The clutch diesn't slip and I don't ride it or otherwise abuse it. Any ideas?

Rust seems like a likely cause, haven't run into that before though. Thanks guys for the suggestions.

A leaking rear main seal on the engine will cause that also. Oil on the plate will make her chatter. My father had a 66 Ford F350 with an inline 6 he drove every day. When the chatter got bad he'd put it up against a tree in hi gear & ride the clutch. Would last a few days... New oil seal was the cure...

Had a similar problem many years ago with a ford.
Took it apart and found that a freeze plug on back of engine was leaking sometime and for some strange reason got on the clutch. Reason I knew is I replaced the clutch first time and thought it was fixed, but problem re-occured in a few months.Hope it aint that serious, maybe rust accumulating on flywheel in damp weather.
