Can anyone tell me how to find out the size of the helicoil kit I need for a Autolite 216 sparkplug?

Thanks.

Autozone has the thread repair kits you are looking for. Comes with the insertion tool and a few of the inserts. Less than $10 if I remember correctly. I just used one on a Jeep and it worked great. Worth checking out...

J.C.Whitney has the drilltap and some inserts for around 10 dollars, but you have to wait on shipment.I used them on two different motors and as far as I know they still work after about 5 years.

A Heli-coil kit consists of a tap drill and tap, the Heli-Coil itself and an insertion tool for the specific heli coil. This stuff ain't cheap and is probably not worth the cost for a one time fix. I have some suggestions-
>If this is a one time fix for you, I suggest you take the head to a machine shop and let them fix it or at least get a cost estimate. >If you want to try fixing the plug hole yourself and have an auto parts supplier that you do business with, maybe he will sell you a heli-coil and loan or rent you the kit. If you do it yourself, make sure the tap drill follows the original hole.
> If you want to buy the kit, then there is lots of good advice on where to buy it in the other replies.
Good luck

These online catalogs will show them. McMaster Carr doesn't have a minimum like MSC or others. mcmaster.com , mscdirect.com . I thought the autolite 216 was just 14mm. Any good local auto supply should have the thread repair kit.

Here are the spark plug thread sizes, with the Heli-Coil part numbers.
M10-1.0 5523-10
M12-1.25 5523-12
M14-1.25 5523-14 Most Common
M18-1.5 5523-18
7/8-18 550
Don't limit yourself to Heli-Coil as any threaded insert of the correct thread and pitch will work.

Today every toolbox needs a metric thread gauge. I am not familiar with that particular plug, but chances are that the threads on it are metric. Mike the outside of the plug threads, convert to metric if using English system micrometer, gauge the threads. Wholesale tool used to carry PemaCoil brand which was exactly like Helicoil, but lower price. Permacoil quality was quite good. Lately WT has had limited inventory of lots of things- hard to get an order filled completely.

You can buy a plug hole rethreading tool at an auto supply. Each end usually has a different thread size. It's like a standard tap, but double ended. Only a couple of dollars. Use it if there are threads left in the hole. Lots less than Heli-coils.
