How do i set the timing on a 7yr. old briggs and stratton 15hp engine? I took it apart and forgot the mark the gears. i thought i figured it out and put it back together but it wont start. i'm thinking it's 180 off but would like to know for certain before i take it apart and try again. i lined up the keyway on the crankshaft with the small hole on the cam gear. I think i need to turn the crank one turn, pull the cam gear and turn it 180 degrees is that right?

What 15hp do you have, it is an ohv engine. The timing marks should line up on camshaft, and crankshaft. If you did this, then you might not have the valves set right. An ohv needs valves set at about .004 clearance.

If you had the cam shaft out it has to be retimed. There should be a .(dot) on one gear tooth on the camshaft, this should point to the keyway that holds the timing gear to the crankshaft(this would also be top dead center). Other than that there is no other timing requires as the fly wheel is keyed to the crankshaft and can't go wrong. Hope this helps.

Turning the crank one turn wouldn't do anything as you would be right back to where you started. Not sure if that is a single cylinder or a twin, But take the cylinder head off, Turn the crank by hand and watch the valves. On the rotation where the valves are opening and closing, there will be a spot when the piston is at top dead center(TDC) where both valves are open at the same time provided the valve clearance is correct. The exhaust valve will be almost closed when you reach TDC and the intake valve will just be opening. You may have to turn the engine back and forth over TDC slowly to see that the valves are infact both open at that point. Of course if this is an overhead valve engine then this test wont work. But it will give you an idea as to how it needs to be timed.
