concrete pilings vs buried poles for barns

Anyone have experience with building a barn with the poles bolted to the top of concrete pilings poured into the ground. I have seen this done on decks but not on a barn, normally bury the poles into the ground.

Would seem logical not to have wood rotting or leaching chemicals into the gound

Opinions please

No experience on barns, but I'd really like to echo the concerns Dave brought up about the lack of lateral location. I've seen a lot of decks and other outdoor structures collapse very early because of flexing and wiggling around the base plate.

Many designs are based on the poles being set in the ground and providing resistance to vertical sway. But many times those designs are not changed when the vertical members are instead simply set on a base plate. All sway resistance is removed, and the structure can now sway and wiggle madly, and quickly fall to the ground. Decks seem like the #1 place this mistake is made. Long vertical poles sitting on a base plate with no diagnal bracing.

Another frequent failing I see with them is that they do not slow down rot. In fact, a number of the designs promote rot. Lots of these base plates create a bucket of water under the wood. Rain runs down the wood and gets collected in the base plate bucket. It then wicks up the wood and rots it. I've seen a number of decks and arbors and such that were badly rotted in just a few years from the use of poor base plates.

We have repaired our polebarn machine shed with footings under the posts. The building was built 35 or more years ago and the posts have rotted mostly off. We jacked the crossbeams up to the original height (and cut off the post about 1 foot above ground level), and then used plywood forms to pour square columns for the posts to rest on. We used 2"X 2"x 1/4" angle iron buried in the concrete and running up along the posts about 3 feet. Then we just drilled through the angle iron and posts after the concrete was set and bolted the posts to the supports. The angle iron gives it rigidity on sideways push from winds.

We do have some other polebarns built with old telephone poles. The telephone company was taking all the old poles out when they decided to bury all the lines. Dad bought 3 miles worth of poles for $5 dollars a pole and we had to take them out (after they took the lines off). We just backed the IH 1066 up to the pole and threw a chain around the poles and lifted with the hitch arm. Pulled the pole right up out of the ground. Those poles will last for a very long time.... wish we had bought about 20 miles of those poles!

I'm going to echo what Steve says in the post below. I've got a pole barn that was built in 1970 with USED poles obtained from the local REMC. These were solid poles, but had been removed where larger ones were needed. We got them for almost nothing, and many were even delivered by REMC because they could drop them here on the way back to town after pulling them.

Won't be much longer until they will have outlasted the metal roof. I'll bet they're good for another 50 years!

my pole barn sits on 4 feet of gravel. the buider put concrete footings in the bottom of each hole. the footins look like they were cast in a 5 gallon bucket that was filled half full.

Perhaps alittle better definition

Use a 4 ft by 12 inch concrete tube, fill with concete and put a j bolt on the top. Attach 6x6 to j bolt using the metal holders they make for that purpose.

Anybody ever done that?

Ron, I don't think a lot of the commercial feet after using more than a few. I use sections of 6" I beam instead. As David points out, lateral bracing is required, but if you have some air moving beneath those posts, the wood won't rot. Any time you put wood in moist contact you have potential problems. I wouldn't be satisfied with building only for as long as I want to use the structure. Mine will far outlast me, unlike the buried posts I've often repaired.

My Dad and I used something like this method to save a 75 year old barn on our property, back when I was growing up. The barn was built with a heavy sill beam set on cedar posts. The cedar posts had rotted out, and we jacked up the sill beam, dug holes and filled them with concrete. This failed miserably due to frost jacking of the conical unformed footings.

When we did it over again 5 years later, we used the cardboard Sonotubes along the lines you propose. This worked really well, because the heaving of the ground could not get a purchase on the cylindrical footings.

Your proposed application will work fine for gravity loads, but obviates one of the main benefits of pole construction. Namely, an embedded pole resists lateral forces pressing sideways as well as gravity loads pressing down.

By bolting the post to the concrete footing, you create a hinge joint that is unable to provide moment transfer to the concrete post sunk in the ground. You will have to provide some alternative lateral bracing system, such as diagonal bracing or plywood sheathed walls, or your barn will fold up like a house of cards in the first strong wind.

I used telephone for my pole barn and they will outlive me i"m sure. I hired a local phone line construction company to set them
