Hydraulic ram water pump

anyone have a hydraulic ram water pump? i was wondering how well they work. i know they don't pump that much water. i have a place on my property were i could sure use something lime a ram pump to move water from a stream to a pond that is just a couple feet higher.

Hi John,

Also look at how jet pumps work on the venturi effect. Very simpley constructed to move a enormous amouts of water.

Also look at undershot water wheels for a huge torque gain from a small 6ft diameter wheel. That in turn could drive a air compressor that can pump water via the venturi effect.

Need more torque, look at overshot water wheels.

Ram pumps are nice but slow to produce volume or over come a large static head.

My brother has used a hydraulic ram for his water supply needs for years at his mountain home in North Idaho. He built his ram pump with a bunch of steel pipe and fittings. The most important parts are the check valves. Buickanddeere explained the principle very concisely.

What you need to have is some loss in elevation on your stream, in order to give the water at your ram pump some pressure and flow. The ram pump captures some of the energy of the flowing water to compress the air in the pump air chamber and, with the action of the check valves, that air forces some of the water in the pump into the outlet of the pump. A hydraulic ram only pumps a small fraction of the water in the pump out the outlet and the rest is returned to the stream. But a ram, with its slow but steady action and no need for any energy besides the flowing water can move a bunch of water over time.

I think my brother got his information about the hydraulic ram out of an old issue of The Mother Earth News Magazine. Although Mother Earth News is not anything like it was in those days, a company still publishes a magazine of the same name and may well have the rights to the information in the old magazines. You might want to contact TMEN. Also some of the old magazines come up for sale at used book stores. Or like anything else, on eBay.

I have always found hydraulic ram pumps very interesting and a clever idea. But they only work if your site is correct for how they work. Good luck.

Kenetic energy from fast flowing water. Is converted to potential energy as pressurized air. The valve swings and the air pressure pushes the water up hill. Valve swings again and the water rams into the chamber compressing the air again. Higher output pressure reduces water flow.

55 years ago I had a USDA information pamfilat on hydraulic rams. Had charts and such on down flow, waste, etc. They really intreged me. I have no idea if anyone still maks them. If you have, say, a down flow from a spring with 10 foot pressure they will pump back up to a tank 20 or more feet up. Amount of waste water depends on conditions. Lots of waste, but some places they would be great. For those never hearing of them, they work with valves and "water hammer" A steam? How about a water wheel hooked to a small gear (sprayer?) pump?

i have found many websites for companies that make them, and instructions for making your own. it looks easy enough. I was just wondering if anyone knows how well these things work. i'm thinking the ram pump would hold up better in this situation than a water wheel, because of the unpredictabiltiy of the water level and flow rate of the stream
