I've had the same Devilbiss 20gal 5hp compressor for four years now and it has worked like a charm. Three days ago it began to strain to turn over when it switched on, eventually blowing the fuse. The motor switches on when the pressure gets low but it won't turn the pump over. It acts as if I had it on an extension cord and it wasn't getting enough power. I cleaned the switch contacts and checked the cord and outlet. Do I need to take the motor apart for a cleaning? Maybe new brushes?

If the other suggestions don't help, check for a leaky or broken outlet valve on one cylinder. This will overpressure that cylinder and can prevent startup.

Unplug it and see if you can turn it by hand, I would lean toward a bad starter capacitor. Likely it is an external one.

Make sure the compressor is unloading after shut-off (the little blast of air that shows the pressure between the pump and the check valve is bleeding off). You also might have a bad start capacitor, or a bad starting switch inside the motor.
