Old Old Drill Press

I have a chance to buy an old drill press probably goes back 80 years or more, its one of those old large floor model ones, probably stands 9 feet tall, has all the old fancy wheels on it, run by flat belts. Didn't see a name on it but there may be one once the dust and dirt get cleaned off, seems to be in good shape, neat looking old press. Does anyone know what these are worth.

I wish I had one of these. They are worth a lot. Drill big holes easy. Don't run it very fast. These are slow speed machines. Make sure the work is well held too. As far as the worth in dollars, most go for little as others have said. It will seem to take up less space when you see how well it drills large holes. For $100 I would buy one if it looked to be in OK shape, even if I had to fix a few things.

I bought one 25 years ago for $350 with motor. Never sorry to have invested that much. We use it for large holes and have a smaller drill press for up to 1/2 inch holes. We put a 1" Jacobs balll bearing chuck on it. The chuck was over $200 but again well worth the money. If you are going to drill any large holes go for it.

They're awesome old tools, but not worth all that much. Maybe $100-200 tops, and many folks get them for $50. Go for it if it's reasonable.

Usually any kind of machine tool still run by flat belts isn't worth all that much value wise unless it happens to be something rare, or just some tool collector really wants it. The one I have sounds alot like yours and it was given to me just to get it out of the guys way. I took mine and mounted a newer style 3 phase motor on it with two step pullies driving the actual flat belt pullies. This allows fwd and rev rotation and gives me alot more speed variation than the flat belt by itself, which allowed me to slow it down to basically a good, all around spindle speed for everyday use. I've been using it for close to 5 years now and I love it. Like you said, with all the pullies, etc it's just a really neat tool to watch and use. Have fun with yours.

I have a strong carlisle & hammond drill press, runs on wide leather belt. I would guess to say it is from the 30's or 40's. I would like to know how much this drill press would be worth, ball part figre.

Thanks for all the replies. I am getting it for $100. It has the other pullies to speed it up or slow it down and it has a fork in the rear where you engage or disengage the pullies. Only problem with this little gem is it takes up so much room.
