How do I find out if a welder is copper wound?

Is it as simple as pulling the cover off or do i have to dive in deep to actually see the windings? and exactly what am I looking for? I know these may be stupid questions, but i've never looked inside a welder before. I just want to know so that I can check out this used Century welder I'm looking at. Thanks

Hi Bryan,

With that type of machine it's really not that important if it's copper wound or not. Theres more controls that are need for total arc stability although copper windings is a must have on the better machines.

I've only used one Century machine. I was impressed with the arc qulaity for such a inexpensive machine. Used welding machines are holding a very high resale value so only you can say it worth $200.

To answer your question, you can look at the windings, AL is white colored metal with CU being red brass colored.

How do I find the value of a Montgomery ward welder purchased around 1900. I know nothing about welders, but my wife"s grandfather bought this and she is wanting to sell it but we don"t know what to ask for it. It still works fine and has the accessories with it. If anyone could help us tih this I would appreciate it. The model and serial numbers are unreadable.

I just picked up a hardly used Montgomery Ward 295Amp AC Montgomery Ward welder at a garage sale for $20. I didn't need it, but "such a deal"! Anyway, I took the cover off to see what the windings are; aluminum!! The insulating material is red colored; maybe to make you think it's copper? It is air cooled and works fine but I don't think I'll be getting rid of my '64 vintage fully copper wound Forney any time soon.

I met to say "fan cooled". Anybody know who made Wards' welders?
