About 5 yrs ago I purchesed a 6.0hp (Brigs&Stranton) Craftsman push mower. Had truble with it from day one. Sears always repaired it. After the warenty was up I had the same problem. Started out sounding like the blade was loose then a knocking noise. A local repair man said my piston rod was shot. Figured I got a lemon.

I purchased a new 6.5 hp (Brige & Strat.) Craftsman push mower about a year ago. It is starting to make the same noise (it sounds like the blade is loose).

Is there something about these mowers I need to know about???

Thanks everyone. I take good care of my mowers. I had my first Craftsman for 15 years. I sold it because the deck was cracking and the plastic wheel were shot. All it required was oil changes, annual air filter and spark plug changes, and at about 9 years old I had to have the float bowl cleaned.

I have taken the new mower back to Sears and I will let you know what they say is the problem.

Craftsman mowers are junk by themselves, but MTD or Murray (who both make them for Sears) don't make the engines. Having the same problem with two different mowers sounds like either something you're doing or incredibly bad luck.

Don't leave out AYP (American Yard Products)who makes most of the riding mowers. I know they have went to all plastic bushings on the front end and steering. My aunt's is about 5 years old and the entire front end needs rebuilt. I have a friend who has a 2 year old model on which the steering broke. Have also heard of many people having engine problems on the Briggs models. There is a reason why Sears sells them cheap.

I had the same problem with my Craftsman. It turned out that the blade was loose. I put a new lock washer on the blade bolt and it fixed it for a year or 2. It happened again and found that the two outside holes in the blade were worn and were loose on the pins on the blade arbor on the crankshaft. I put the original Craftsman blade on and have not had a problem since. Good Luck!

And once again, someone has learned that ANYTHING craftsman is craftsman. Meaning only that common repair or common replacement parts for any crapsman merchandise (in general) is designed to be noncompatable with other manufacturers off the shelf item. This is why I buy broken and/or worn-out hand tools at auction or yard sales then trade'em in for new ones at their nearest outlet.

We purchased a new Craftsman push mower this summer from the local Sears store, and I noticed that all of the display mowers had NO oil in them. The manager said that the new buyer had to add the correct amount of oil (which was provided) as per the owner's manual. I wonder how many of these get sold, and taken home and started without following those instructions!

These motors are all shipped without oil. They have been test and adjustment run at the factory using a fog or mist oil system through the oil fill hole. I wonder how many of these engines are ruined at the factory from this test run with misted crankcases.

Not sure about the model you have, but I bought a Craftsman mower about 6 years ago, but I believe mine has the Tecumseh engine in it. It hasn't given me a bit of trouble. I believe if it were mine, I'd take it back to Sears and raise he$$ about it---even if it might be out of warranty----pick your time, like when there's 3-4 people around the cash register, and see if they won't try to make you happy----it's worth a shot, anyway.
Good Luck!

I resently saw a brand new snapper push mower that someone had bought at wal-mart for $250. It had a 6 hp briggs engine and it had the same noise you describe, then I noticed that there was a large hole in the side of the block and the cap on the connecting rod was loose. However this engine had almost no oil so maybe he ran it to distruction. The worse part is that the price tag didn't even come off yet.

I bought a new Craftsman 3.5HP mower about 10 years ago. Tecumseh engine (not my favorite) but I've had no problems whatsoever. I picked up a 1998 Lawnboy 6.5 HP 2 stroke self propelled at a garage sale about a month ago for $20. Took the "plastic" carb. apart twice before I got it to run right but this is the best mower I've ever used; bar none!! That doesn't answer your question; just a comment on Lawnboy's performance. I used to think 6 HP or better was overkill on a walk behind but after using this 6.5 HP machine in very heavy grass, I'm a believer.
