Older Century welder

a guy at work has an older century stick welder for sale. it is a ac/dc stick model with the pistol grip amperage control. It is about 25 years old he said and has been used very little. I believe it was called the "tri-star". Does anybody know if this is a good welder? I know that the newer century welders aren't that good but I'm wondering if maybe this one is built better because of it's age. I don't need a welder quite yet so I don't mind holding out for a lincoln or a miller, but this looks like it is a pretty good deal at $200 for an ac/dc model in almost new shape. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

the older centurys are excellent welders. The ones I used were from the 60's and had an excellent arc, we used them for millwright work and liked them much better than Lincoln. I haven't used the newer century welders, but know they do look lighter built than the ones I am farmiliar with.

Bryan, I had an Century Tri-Star, I liked it real well, but somebody liked it better than me. It walked off(riped off) I liked it because it had an infinte amp control & alittle higher D.C. output than the Lincoln's I think when I bought mine it was way over $300.00 closer to $400.00 When I went to replace it it was more than I could aford at the time. So I bought the Lincoln 225 A.C./D.C. which is over $300.00 now. If you could negotiate the price to.$175.00 to $150.00 that would be a fair price. I am not sure if they were would with copper like the old 180amp welders. Hope this helps you out. Dave F.

Century's a midrange brand, made good welders in the past. $200 sounds like way too much to me. You can get used Lincoln AC welders for $50-100 if you're careful, so I wouldn't be really hot on the Century. DC's nice but that feels like a lot of money for one of these.

Bryan,
I don't own a Century but my neighbor does and he swears by it. If it is that old, it should be all copper and should be a good welder. I do have an old Forney f230 and a Lincoln AC180T (both AC only) that weld perfect. I use them both frequently. Myself, I just like older tools and equipment. Seems all the newer things are built cheaper and are more on the "planned obsolescence" curve. So that being said, hopefully someone will chime in on the Century specifically but I believe an older machine will be your best bet. Good luck.

I just purchased a Twentieth Century heavy duty 295 amp welder. It came with a side unit battery charger. I am looking for any information out there about this machine. Such as: possible age, value, was this a good unit. Thanks for the info.
