Just got a beautiful kerosene torpedo heater, an International Harvester 100. I bought it 'cause its IH, but would like it to work a little better. When I plug it in it puffs white smoke and about 4" of flame. Any ideas? Also, who did make this heater? All input appreciated.

Puffs of white smoke indicate contamination in the fuel, such as droplets of water. Flames out the end indicates excessive pressure. The pressure is very critical and requires a gauge that registers very low amounts in small increments 3-5 psi.

I have purchased parts online from this company and get good service

Do yourself and other who are in your shop a big favor. Get a LP gas heater.

Other advice is good. Also check fuel pressure. It sounds as if you may have too much.

The other guys have given some good info, but if you still can't make it work, contact your friendly local home heating expert, he should be able to help you. Those heaters can be dangerous if not functioning properly.

Did your heater come with a book? Annual Maintainance Kits are available for most of these heaters from Grainger parts division. If you run them much they do need maintainance. Change the air filters, clean the pump out and replace the vanes if worn and reset pump and check air pressure. Clean the burner nozzle. There is a screen filter in the inlet pipe to clean out. Find a dealer service center and let them service it for you.

Hey Tom, I don't know about the IH branded heaters, but Remington, Dayton, and several others I've seen are all made by the same company. If your's is the same, look for a tag somewhere that says DESA on it. It's usually on a tag giving the heater specs. Usually there is an 1-800 number there also for DESA. As far as your problem, the symptoms sound just like what mine have always done right before they run out of fuel, or when they have gotten water in the fuel somehow. Instead of a steady stream of fuel the pump is putting shots into the firebox, either because it is sucking air, or a mix of fuel and water. This can causing the flame to shoot out the end as well as the puff white because of the lack of fuel/heat to burn right. I'd check to see that the fuel pickup isn't getting clogged, and also drain the fuel that's in it and refill it with clean fuel.
If that doesn't work, I'd take it back and exchange it for another one because it could have a burner tip. Good luck.

Use pure kerosene, change fuel nozzle and air filter, set air pressure to spec..
