I just had the students massing pennies in class. They will find the penny changed in 1982. It went from a mixture of copper and zince to a zinc pellet plated with copper. If you scratch a newer penny and put it in vinegar, the zinc should eventually be corroded and you will be left with a copper shell.

1982- before 1982 the penny was 95%copper and 5% zinc after 1982 the penny is 97.6% zinc and 2.4% copper. Some 1982 pennys can be either.

The modern penny is aluminum, copper coated. Adopted not too many years ago.

Nope. The 1943 penny was galvanized (zinc-plated) steel.
