Water/Sand blaster?

I saw a low cost alternative to sandblasting. Typical sand blasters are a real problem because of all the dust and sand that you have to keep out of your breath air. They also take a lot of air to run.

Northern Hydraulics has an attachment that fits your pressure washer and mixes sand into the high speed stream of water. It sounds really good because the water would prevent sand from going airborn and I can imagine the sand would work very well in a water stream.

Does anyone have any experience with water/sand blasting?

Water needed to remove paint for steel IBC containers. Also a 3 dimensional spinner used to clean the interior of totes.

I wish all the guys who want to sandblast and trundle into my shop with their 1953 Jaeger portable compressors bought "for a song" would consider this. It would sure help my nerves....

Yes I have experience with this unit. I just sandblasted my tractor chassis, bush-hog, 6 goot blade, and 7 foot snow scoop with this unit. It worked EXCELLENT. It spatters water and the blasting medium (I used black beauty sand) fairly well, and you get covered with it. But it work very well. SOmetimes the hose with the sand became clogged with water backdraining into this hose, and it was just a matter of pulling the hose off, slapping it on something, and starting all over. Technique: I found that it was best to keep the metal tip of this hose near the surface and not bury it, becasue it pulled up more sand that way. A GOOD IDEA IS TO GET ONE OF THOSE INDUSTRIAL (drywall) PLASTIC 5 GALLON PAILS WITH A LID...OR BETTER YET, A LID WITH A SPOUT (BUT YOU CAN also just DRILL A HOLE TOO TO GET THE NOZZLE IN THERE). This method keeps the water from splashing into your dry sand...a source of clogs too. I was impressed, and it went a long at a reasonable pace. Protect your eyes...sand and water spatters everywhere...but you're right, no dust! tm

Tyler, I bought the $75 unit from Northern, and it works great, after some modifications. It barely worked at all with the pipe extension that comes with it. I removed the pipe from the blast/ siphon ass'y and screwed it directly onto the pipe on the pressure washer wand The sand siphon action worked much better, and was further improved by elevating the sandbag to waist level to minimize suction effort. I did the hood on an Oliver 70 ,both sides, w/ 2 coats of paint, in 1/2 hour!!! I was using a Landa Pressure washer with an 8 hp engine.

That must be different than the unit I mentioned. This one has a hopper on wheels that you could roll around.

Yes, they work well. Mostly you see something like that used to clean grafitti off of walls, sidewalks, etc. I can't comment on the quality of the Northern unit, but one of my old customers used one called a Wadu. He also did soda blasting wet or dry. He used to buy 250 gal. of distilled water when cleaning metal parts to prevent rusting. He had the tank in the back of a dually, and the pressure washer was gravity fed.

For under $50, it's worth the investment to try it out. I don't like sandblasting with air.

Some places now are using 'ice blasters' that crush ice and put it in a high-pressure air stream.

No sand. No silica dust.

But I imagine they are waaay expensive to buy...

bbot, these are dry ice blasters and yes are expensive. But, no sand, and in fact no residue at all except removed rust and paint.
