A while back someone asked how to clean a gas tank, and one good suggestion was to tie it to a cement mixer. We had a gas tank that needed the rust and scale removed from the inside, but we don't have a cement mixer, so we jacked up one rear wheel of our Allis Chalmers "B", and strapped the tank to the wheel center with rubber bungee cords. We put in a bunch of tire chain cross links, and taped the holes shut, and let it tumble like a rock tumbler for about 1/2 hour in 1st gear, then 1/2 hour in reverse. Then we took the tank off, turned it over and did it again in 1st. and reverse. The inside of the tank cleaned up real well. Now we're going to use gas tank sealer in the inside, and it should be good for many years.

Any readers should know that you NEVER clean out a gas tank with fumes in it , by useing a vacuum cleaner. Or anything else which would create a spark. I knew better , but was not thinking. Went to clean out a mouse nest , which was dumped into my tank due to the neighbor having it in his gas can. From that day on , I use my own gas cans. After all the gas has been drained out the bottom , I stuck the end of the vacuum cleaner hose into the tank and said "OK PLUG IT IN". The second them fumes hit the motor , we had a ball of flames shooting 3--4 feet above the vacuum cleaner. I came 2 feet off the ground just from the noise it made. The cleaner was setting just behind me. Like I said , we both knew better. That tractor was a John Deere "B". Anyone who has experience with them old John Deere tractors , knows the whole tractor has to be taken apart in order to take the gas tank off. That is what I had to do. "What a job". If the nest would have stayed in tact , it wouldn't be so bad. But it didn't. I had little tiny pieces of mouse nest all over the inside of the tank.Hundreds of them. All it would take is one little piece to plug the line , and the tractor would stall out. I played that game for a while.

another way to clean a tank is to put in a coffee can full of clean gravel, two-three gallons of diesel or cleaning solvent, close the tank and put in the back of your pickup. a few days of running to town and general farm duty will slosh it around pretty good, has worked for me. Also diesel will show up any pinhole leaks pretty fast, as an oily spot on the outside.
