Disk cleanup should run automatically. It is part of the scheduled maintance and will delete temporary files such as cookies and history. If it is not remembering the sites after you return your cookies setting has been changed. If it is not remembering your personal information when you fill out a form then inline auto complete has been changed.
Most likely is disk clean up deleted this stuff. If you want to keep address add to favorites.

Disk Cleanup in Win98 does not delete cookies or history.

Your first statement is what I was referring to. Cookies and history are not cleared.

Your second statement is correct.

To clear cookies and history, you go through IE, tools, internet options, the general tab. There you can clear cookies and history.

Try this if you don't believe me. Click on "my computer", right click on your "c" drive. Select disk cleanup. Run it. Then open IE, click on your history. It will still be there. Then navigate to c:windows/cookies, they will still be there too.

You probably either inadvertant or in a scheduled maintenance action deleted your history files. Might be hard to recover now. Why don't you add the sites that you look at to Favorites by selecting Favorites and then add to my favorites so you will not lose the sites later.

If you're using Internet explorer, click on tools, internet options, look down at history, days to keep in history, set what you want. Then click on the content tab, autocomplete button, put checkmarks in the blocks you want..

thanks for the replys. i don't think i can back anything up, i only have harddrive, not floppydisc. i did do a disk cleanup, so that may be an answer as some of you noted. i will go to internet options etc. as one of you suggested.i think i looked at that earlier, but not sure. not that great on computer. besides this problem, my pc does something that i have found no one has ever heard about. i'll try again this evening, let you know. thanks a whole lot

well here i am again. i went to tools, options, etc. and did what i think some of you said, it worked and now i have dropdowns from google, yahoo etc. it seems to be doing what it before. thanks to all. by the way, if someone wants to ponder this, here goes. while i have the computer on. every so often it produces a sound, like an ambulance makes[ not the old siren sound] but the hi-lo-hi-lo sound. lasting about 3 minutes or less. does not interfere with the function of the pc. but it is ANNOYING. it is a shop built computer about 4-5 years old. i have had it 3 years. no one from any pc shops has heard of one doing that. sorry for long post. very much thanks to all.

Also sounds to me like a bad bearing in hard drive or possibly the fan bearing.

either bad bearings in your Harddisk or you have a fan that is failing. If it is a fan get it fixed before you melt something (AKA let the smoke out)

thanks again for the reply. i don't think it has to do with bearing etc. i perhaps did not describe the sound properly. it comes from the computer, at a seemingly random time lasting less than 2-3 minutes. it sounds like an alarm going off, rather than something that is rubing or grinding or screeching. as i said it has the sound of an emergency vehicle. thanks and have a great day.
