Anyone out there know of a good source for a replacement tank for my compressor? I don't care about brand name vs. generic, I just need to replace the tank on my horizontal tank 20 gallon compressor. It was given to me, and has an epoxy patch where the tank rusted through. Doesn't sound like a real safe rig, does it? (I do not use it as-is... waiting to fix it first.) I've found a couple of places that sell them, but for the money I may as well buy a whole new rig.

Thanks,
Darren

Darren, WW Granger is a good sourse for a tank. OBTW you could use an old LPG tank (ie 250 gal) as your new compressor tank. The only problem is filling it with H2O so the compressor base can be welded on to the tank. (leave. No Air @ point of weld) Then drain! mount and plumb in the compressor. And you are basicly done. Just an idea!
Good Luck,
John A.

A 250 gallon tank would require excessive time to pump up to shutoff pressure. A reasonable size is a 100# tank(20 gallon),usually free. They have a 3/4" NPT thread outlet, may be plumbed without any drilling or cutting by using a close nipple, a tee, and required piping. The air entrance and exit is the same opening. I insure a tank is empty by removing the valve and inverting it for a week or so(LPG is heavier than air), then I attach the compresssor/motor mounting plate on one side; attach a handle, then attach wheels to the bottom end so it may be used on its side. Disclaimer: That's my way, don't do as I do though it may be deadly if you slip up.

Ray,Sounds good to me. But I made a BBQ pit out of an ol 150 gal tank... was open for 4 yrs, filled up with H2O, Then cut the end out with a tourch. The LPG that was impregnated into the steel let me know it was still there! Just be very careful when working on LPG tanks!!!
We converted an ol 750 Gal Lpg tank on a trailet to DSL nurse tank for filling tractors in the field. Filled it with H2O welded an ol truck rim on the end of the tank to wrap the hose on. Drained the H20, let stand for 1/2 a day the finished the project. That trailer is stil in use.
The LPG tank will cause longer filling times, but when full there is a Ton of volume.
Later John A.

One option is to cut the end out of your tank and then buy a portable air tank that will slide inside of the old tank. If you re-pipe it properly with quick couplers, you can still remove the portable tank and carry it where it is needed. Be sure that the pressure switch and relief valve are still in the circuit.

Darren, Do a search for military surplus. Lots of surplus places have new air tanks reasonably priced. I have bought 2 good used compressors lately for $100 each from our local surplus contractor. Find out who buys surplus in your area.
