Planning on doing some repiping and need to clarify the term WSP that is stamped on most shutoff or regulating valves. Is the nomenclature working steam pressure and does it mean test pressure or working pressure? If so what is the safety factor? Thanks Bill

Hi Bill,

WSP stands for "working steam pressure" which means the valve is safe for saturated steam at that pressure. It is NOT a shell test pressure which would be several orders of magnitude greater, depending on standards. Actual safety factors are not stated, if what you mean by safety factor is the difference between safe working pressure and actual failure. You would need to get the actual standards and manufacturer's rating information for specifics, but here is an example:

Crane 125# cast steel gate valve (2"-12"):
1. 125# working steam pressure (non shock)
2. 200# working pressure WOG (water, oil, gas)(cold, non shock)
3. Shell test pressure 350#
4. Seat test pressure 225#

Thanks for the info. Our popoff valve is set at 150# so a 200# WSP will be well within the safety factor. We test at 125% of rated pressure
