I want to put a pto on my 1969 Ford F350 with an NP435 in it. I have seen numerous used Chelsea one's around, but don't know which one to buy. Can anyone give me some idea of which one will work.

Thanks,
Bob

Any chance of finding a similar vintage wrecker or dump truck with the same transmission? It would have a PTO unit already mounted on it. Just a thought.

Regards

Gordo

The NP 435 was used also on some Dodge trucks. The NP 435 had some variety of gear ratios, particularly the 1st gear. Not sure if the ratios have any bearing on which PTO it might use.

all i've ever done is take the tag to the pto shop and leave with the right one.you have to shim between the trans and pto sometimes to get the right clearance.good luck

well RJ pretty much nailed it on the head, ya need a book, actualy a bunch of books, like the pto shops have to know what to use, or ya need a bunch of ptos and lotsa luck, thats the method i use usualy. my father had a tranny that was supposed to go into his old IH dump truck, it had a pto on it so when i was looking for a pto for my 84 F350 i took that one off and looked at it, it was helical gears just like my tranny, luckly with the proper shims it bolted up and works good to run my pto winch. there are only 2 types of pto openings, the 6 bolt and the 8 bolt. your F350 will have the 6 bolt, the tricky part is finding the proper gear, its almost ceartainly a helical gear so if ya can pick up a few ptos cheap then go for it and hope one fits, most likely it will. good luck

PTO applications are pretty specific as to what they will bolt up to. The gear that contacts the transmission or tansfercase gear has to mesh properly. Also there is a spacer and shims that helps you get proper gear lash. There is usually a build tag (in code of course) on the pto housing that designates what gear box it will couple up to. A GOOD pto shop may tell you what code to look for but they make money selling new ones. Your best bet is to find one that you know came off of a NP 435.
