High Mileage Oil Question

There are a lot of advertisments for "High Mileage" oil, specificaly for engines with over 75,000 miles on them.
What's the straight skinny on these? Are they really any better for an older engine, or is it just a marketing gimmick?
What is the difference, or is there any difference, between "High Mileage" and regular oil?
Will "High Mileage" oil do any more for an old engine than just adding something like STP at an oil change?

I currently have 4 vehicles all with over 100K miles and never used high mieage oil. I have tried the engine treatments on 1 or 2 of them, but didnt follow gas mileage enough to tell if they helped at all. The car I use most of the time making deliveries has about 170K (1991 chevy cavalier 2.2L 4 cyl) while my wife normally drives a 1993 full sized blazer with an 8 cyl with just over 140k (year before the Tahoe, but same thing basically) the other 2 are an E350 14' box truck and an Oldsmobile 6 cyl. The box truck blew it's engine a few months after I sold it because it ran out of oil. (The new owner gave it back to me instead of finishing payments)

I have also had many other vehicles that never had engine trouble. The key is to keep the engine oiled and filter clean. To this end I try to change both every 3k miles, but have run close to 10 k on occations where I was driving long distances without alot of dust. (Driving from Boston area to Idaho and back for example.)

The key is simply changing the oil. I have had engines hit 240K, 175K, 205K,155K, and (currently) 152K. They have been all makes and models and have received whatever brand name oil is on sale that week. Changes between 3500 and 5k regularly. All the engines ran when gotten rid of, no engine work ever.
On another note, there is a brand name of FILTER I will never purchase again, it will remain unnamed as it is one of the best sellers in the world, but its Purolator for me these days!

I have a Dodge Dakota, 1990 model with 195,000 miles on it. I've always changed oil and filter at around 3,500 miles, but the oil I've used runs the gamut. Always 10-30 or 10-40. I've used Exxon, Mobil, Texaco,, Coastal, Warren, Napa, Advance Auto store brand, and Shell.

Between changes, I add about half a quart. My guess is that the frequency and style of driving has more to do with it than the brand of oil.

I have been wondering about that same oil question. My 91 Suburban 454 has 130K but uses no oil at all. I change the Castrol 10W30 around every 3K miles. The motor doesn't leak, no spots on the floor either. I used to use QuakerState in my 79 350 because my father did, but after a cam failed at 45K and started puffing blue smoke at start up at 55K, I gave up on the truck and QS.

I have have great sucess with Castrol. I found an engine treatment called QMI. I put it in the 454 at 58K, and in my wife's car 30K ago at 100k. neither engine leaks or uses enough oil to add any between changes. I don't know if it's the QMI or the Castrol ot the combination of the two.

I use Castrol too. Had very good luck with it. I have 190K on my Subaru and it uses about 1/2 quart in 4K. I took a compression test a couple of weeks ago while changing the plugs, 165 LBS +-3 on all cylinders. Must be good oil.
On the high mileage oil... it seems to swell up and "condition" seals and such, but for how long. My experience with the transmission additives that do the same thing indicates that in not too long of a time the seals will sort of fall apart and leak a LOT worse than before the additive. Just my opinion though.

I have a 1984 Dodge D-50 pickup with 215k miles on it. I change the oil every 5K miles and have no real oil consumption problems, 2 quarts between changes. Here in sunny southern Arizona I run Wally World store brand 20-50w @.88 per quart. I have seen some pretty high prices on some of this high mileage oil.

I drive an 89 F250 with 155k miles on the clock
It used oil about a quart every 300 miles...didn't leak and didn't smoke just liked the taste of oil I guess. One day I bought a quart of the Valvoline high mileage oil, after adding 3 quarts over time between changes the truck doesn't use any oil at all any more!! It works!! Last oil change it got all Valvoline high mileage oil and its still full. don't know how or why but it solved that little problem for me.

Essentially, these oils have seal conditioners in them. They just assume that as your engine ages, the seals will tend to shrink and crack. You won't find any "miracle" bonding agents or other such things in the formula. If you engine is burning oil - not leaking oil - this type of oil will not do you much good.

Had a car go 288K changing oil & filter every 5K whether it needed it or not. Finally gave it away. Another started eating oil at around 160K...bought used. Replaced the valve stem seals and it quit eating oil. 5K oil changes whether it needed it or not. Other cars have been high mileage with the same regimen.
The high mileage oils advertise that they rejuvinate the valve seals. Maybe they do.

I am sure this will get a lot of pro's and cons, do a google search on high mileage oil and you will spend much time reading on it. Per say, if a car/truck runs 75-100K miles on 10/30 and doesnt use much oil, I would continue using it untill signs of extreme oil usage, them maybe just go to a heavier oil, but this can be bad in cold weather. A lot of north star engines use 1Qt in 1000 miles and they say this is normal???
I think scheduled oil and filter changes at 2 to 3K is the key. Short trips more often. Never did believe in this 7500 mi changes.
