OXY/ACET WELDING 16 GA STAINLESS

I am fabricating an elbow/transition of stainless steel for the air intake of my air compressor. After the pieces were cut out and rolled, I clamped two pieces together, preheated somewhat to minimize warping and very easily welded about 2". I then moved to the other end and could not get the metal to melt, only ball up. I consulted an old book "THE OXY-ACETYLENE HANDBOOK" and it suggests using a flux. A booklet by "STOODY" on arc welding says never preheat.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the advice T-BONE. I went to a welding shop today to purchase flux, the gentleman tried to sell me high temp brazing flux, which I already have.

I returned home and prepared flux per T-BONE's suggestion. Now I know what silver solder flux is made of, as it looks exactly like the borax and alcohol that I mixed.

I will try it tomorrow.

The number escapes me as it has been a few years, I used to use flux coated silver solder rods on small/thin stainless materials. Low melting point and always seemed to work for me. Flux was harder to remove than anything else. Was clear and hard as a rock.

Hi Jim,

Incomplete fusion can be caused by not enough heat, improper flame mix, or a hard spot in the SS.

Could you have picked up the wrong filler rod for the opposite end by mistake?

SS can be weird when welding. You'll be welding along then hit either contamination, a flaw in the base metal or a hard spot and the motlen puddle will spread out, drop thru or spatter. This even happens while Tig welding SS.

Alot of SS is much like AL when gas welding as it gets oxidized easy and needs cleaned. SS likes a slightly reducing flame. When I have problems I usually start from scratch, clean the weld zone, cut the end of the filler rod off, clean both with alcohol and or wire brush and emery paper. A flux can be made from Borax and alcohol. Sometimes just dipping the hot rod end into borax works well.

You might also try some new scrap and see if the SS it's self is the problem. Some SS does not take well to gas welding.
